HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-11-11, Page 5ommunity support services need assistance
Dear Editor:
As a regular subscriber to
the Goderich Signal -Star, I
was happy to have read your
ongoing coverage from the
initial planning of the ICU
fund-raising campaign. As a
resident of Goderich, it is
very reassuging to know that
the community in which we
live is so supportive, and
with a little guidance, can
come to the assistance of an
institution that is so very im-
portant to each and every
one of us..
It was very heart-warming
to read about the various
community service clubs
that 'donated substantial
amounts of their hard-
earned monies that also
originated from some sort of
fund-raising within our very
own community. As I read, I
couldn't help but think of the
numbers of community sup-
port services, that, not
unlike Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital, are in
great need of assistance, not
only financial, but in the
form of volunteerism as
well. As we have seen, a
small donation by all, can
contribute to a common
cause in a very large way.
In our very own communi-
ty, there is an increasing
number of elderly, disadvan-
taged, and -or disabled peo-
ple who, with assistance
from these support services,
would be able to safely re-
main in their own homes and
lessen the burden of over-
crowding in the institutions,
and in turn, be content to
know that a few of their final
days, months or years can be
spent comfortably within
familiar surroundings.
Likewise, many people are
choosing to remain in the
home to recover, and -or be
rehabilitated from illness,
and even Co die with dignity
within the surroundings of
the home and family they
love.
Imagine what even one
quarter off the money' raised
to build our ICU could do for
many of these people at a
fraction of the cost of
hospitalization.
Financial assistance could
assist with expansion of the
Meals On Wheels program to
provide regular hot meals to
many who cannot, afford
transportation to dine out
when they have lost the in-
terest and -or ability to
prepare their own meal, or
.provision • of regular
transportation to enable the
homebound to, partake in
social functions or necessary
errands that are a part of our
very existence. Community
lean cupboards continually
face the problem of lost
equipment, thereby limiting
the number of needy people
who wish to be rehabilitated
at home. A wider variety of
equipment for these loan
cupboards would also be an
asset. Community .support
for the county homemaking
agency would help to
minimize the cost of private
homemaking, thus enabling
a larger segment of the
population to purchase the
service.
These are only a few of the
unending list of support ser-
vices that would benefit
from our contributors to pro -

vide service at a much lesser
expense than what it re-
quires to renovate and main-
tain an institution.
Perhaps it is time that we
consider these people and as
well as preparing for the
time when "It could've you",
make an effort to assist
those who are already in
need and who would dearly
love the opportunity to make
a choice if there were an ade-
quate choice to make.

Clinic
successful
Dear Editor,
The recent blood donor
clinic at G.D.C.I. on October
29 was an unqualified suc-
cess. There were 348
registered donors and 316
units of blood collected.
May I please thank the
following people for their
contributions in both time
and money:
The Goderich 'Lions Club
members who telephoned
the donor's lists; Stan
Connelly and ,the Goderich
Kinsmen Club; the
Dungannon Kinsmen Club
for transporting the Men-
nonites; Champion Road
Machinery for donating the
food; Tuckey Beverages for
donating all the pop; the
local businesses who ad-
vertised the clinic; ''the
Huron County ,Board of
Education for the use of
G.D.C.I.; Bin Murdie and
the G.D.C.I. students who
helped set up the clinic; Paul
Howe and the G.D.C.I. House
Competition which helps
bring so many student
donors; the Goderich
Kinettes for babysitting;
Zehrs, the Signal -Star and
the arena staff; the people
who displayed our posters;
all the faithful volunteer
workers who donated their
time to work on clinic day;
and last, but most important,
the people who came to
donate their blood and
relieve thearea shortage.
This was the largest clinic
in Goderich in some time so
everyone is very pleased
with the excellent results.
Thank you.
Mary Donnelly,
Local Coordinator.

Dear Editor:
There has been much
public controversy in regard
to amendmentsXo the
Charter of Rights. It is ob-
vious that more power has
been given to the provinces
and also more freedom. The
system, as I see it, can either
be used to unite the pro-
vince5 whether they opt out;
or remain as members.
If we have unity among the
provinces, this unity can be
used as hornet power. I
would like to make a short
explanation of what I mean'
Hornets do not persuade
anyone to go against their

will, but they just make
them willing to go. So, it
would be with a group off pro-
vinces, united, that could br-
ing in amendments to the
Constitution, because they
would have a majority.
My feeling for Mr. Leves-
que is one of pity for not hav-
ing signed with the rest of
the provinces. He has
forfeited his rights as
representative of Quebec. If
the majority of the provinces
do not intercede on his
behalf, he is going to be left
holding the bag, and an emp-
ty one at that. I never
thought of the man as being
an individual who would run
away from a problem.
You have to admire the
sheer audacity of the man,
but sometimes one can 'be
sincerely wrong. However,
he may have a very good
reason for doing what he did.
I would like to remind him
the game he is playing is not
exclusive. More than one can
play at it.
Aboriginal rights, such as
the Indians and the Eskimos,
being ignored, is a cause for
shame on the part of the
premiers. They, the Indians,
were classified as savages,
but after looking at the pollu-
tion of the environment, and
the destruction of their
livelihood, it behooves one to
ask who the savages really
are. They, or the ones who
call themselves civilized?
I'm quite sure that the con-
troversyhas not bee com-
pleted and the proposed
package will be the subject
of many revisions and
amendrilentsbefore they are
finally finished with it.
I rather think it is a start in
the right direction, and with
perseverance (in some cases
s5
brute perseverance) and
compromise, solutions can
be reached, ending in a
satisfactory conclusion for
all.
Sincerely,
N. J. Minaker
