HuronPerth Lung \ ssoc,
Seal campaign begins
The Huron -Perth Lung
Association officially began
its Christmas Seal Campaign
on November 1 with the
mailing of Christmas Seals
to some 11,500 homes in the
Huron -Perth area.
Since 1927, lung
associations across Canada
have used the "Christmas
Seal" as their sole method of
raising funds — funds which
only a few years ago were
used to wipe out the
mysterious white plague -
tuberculosis.
Today over five million
Canadians suffer from other
lung disorders ranging from
the common coldto lung
cancer.
Edith Brothers of the
Huron -Perth Lung
Association reports that,
"Lung diseases extract a
staggering sum from
Canadian economy. The cost
of hospital treatment alone is
estimated at more than $400
million annually. Payments
to physicians, the cost of
drugs and other related

Respiratory diseases are
the greatest cause of ab-
senteeism from school and
work and the cause of death
for more than 19,459
Canadians in 1979, the most
recent year for which figures
are available.
Last year $50,000 was
raised in Huron sinal .Perth
counties. A small portion of
this was senttothe Canadian
Lung Aseociatlon for
national programa and the
remainder stayed in this
area These funds enable the
Huron -Perth Lung
Association to carry out the
many preventative
programs in an effort to
control lung disease.

TV program shown
"The Spirit of -Blyth" looks
at . how a small summer
theatre experiment became
an integral part of the year
round life of a community,"
says People Patterns pro-
ducer Joan Reed -Olsen. The
program will be aired
Wednesday, November 11 at
9:30 p.m.
Through its theatre -cum -
cultural centre's offering of
workshops for children and
adults, its 80 member choral
group and its art gallery of
ever-changing exhibits, the
Blyth Festival has reached
out to touch every part of the
community.
When newspaperman
Keith Roulston and , the
senior citizens of Blyth peti-
tioned the local council to
turn the 50 -year-old plus
community centre into a
cultural centre, little did
they know that the 500 seat
theatre that .evolved would
one day attract people from
all over the province.
Co-founder Roulston and
(RECTORY
artistic director Janet Amos,
who works as director, actor
and playwright; see the
Blyth Theatre as a spr-
ingboard for Canadian
plays. Amos and her actor -
husband Ted Johns, brought
to Blyth the Theatre Passe
Muraille approach of in-
digenous theatre. That is,
the cast and director live in,
study the community, then
develop the storylfne and
script based on their
observations of events and
people. This summer three
productions played to
capacity crowds throughout
their engagements.
"The Spirit of Blyth" looks
at the creation and produc-
tion of Festival 81's Fire and
Ice, directed by David Fox.
The program also in-
vestigates how the members
of this rural community
have developed an apprecia-
tion of theatre, and how they
respond to theatrical presen-
tations - based on often con-
troversial local history.
The 1981 Christmas Seal Campaign was officially opened
Saturday as members of the Huron -Perth Lung Association
raised its flag outside the Huron County Courthouse Satur-
day. Raising the flag are Edith. Brothers, campaign chair-
man; May Dodds, publicity chairman; Bob Allen, who
represented Warden Fred Haberer on behalf of the county
and Beryl Dunmore, executive -director. The little girl in
front, displaying a sheet of 1981 Christmas Seals is Leslie
Brereton.( Photo by Dave Sykes)
