(Photo by Cath Wooden) Vikes to meet Panthers Saturday BY TD The Goderich V ikings have already eliminated two teams in Huron -Perth Conference senior football play, but they have one opponent left, and the Vikings all know the Exeter Panthers will provide their toughest test The Panthers and Vikings meet Saturday at 1:30 in Exeter to decide the Con- ference championship. The Vikings reached the finals by defeating the Listowel Lords, 44-0 and the Norwell q Redmen 49-6 in sudden -death playoff games here last Tuesday and Thirsday.- In both games, the Vikings • had the ap-'-•-- pearance of a team reaching its peak at precisely the right • • time of the season. ' Although Viking coaches Ray Donnelly and Chris Connor have a healthy. respect for the undefeated Panthers, both felt the Vikings are ready for the championship game. The Panthers, got by the Vikings in their regular*, season meeting here 21-15 but since that game the Vikings have done nothing but get better. Both offensive and defensive units have jelled and the specialty teams are playing well. The maturation of quarterback Dave MacDonald, has given the Vikings a potent __cup- bination of running and 1Lg Ra13-P1inkett Stuart Crew provided the bulk of the Viking offensive thrust against Listowel. Plunkett scored two touchdowns, kicked a 36 -yard field goal and booted five converts for a 20 -point game. Crew ran for three touch-• downs on runs of 15, 10 and five yards. The other Vikings major was scored by Mike `Crazy Legs' Murphy who ran 55 yards on a pass in- terception. Plunkett's touchdowns `came on a 45 -yard sweep a n d a 10 -yard pass reception from quarterback MacDonald. Defensively,. ibe—Vikings. had five pass interceptions .. .and ...._three ...sacks- _ Da.ve.- McDaonald, Greg Lapaine, Mike Murphy, Chris Pitre and Kent Scholtz had strong games. n Against Norwell Thur- sday, Dave MacDonald threw three touchdown passes: two to Rob Plunkett which covered distances of 20 and 55 yards, and the other to Darryl Beattie, a 40 yard effort. Beattie had another touch- down on a seven -yard sweep. Stuart Crew went 30 yards off -tackle- for the Vikings' first touchdown. Jeff Feagan ran 20 yards for another Goderich score and Greg Marshall went over on a .fourth. quarte.r_one-_yard dive -. for the final Viking major. Plunkett kicked three converts and ran for a pair of Sunset beats O'Briens in CHHL play There were several games played Sunday and Monday in Central Huron Hockey League competition. . BY TD The GDCI senior girls basketball team lost their second game of the Huron - Perth Conference schedule last Wednesday, dropping a 48-33 verdict to a hot - shooting Stratford Nor- thwestern team in Stratford. The Vlkings now have a record of six wins and two defeats, heading into another tough test Wednesday in Exeter. Friday, they en- tertain Central Huron here. Sonja Lapaine and Barb Conlon had seven apiece. Patti Botz added four, Robin McDonald had three, and Theresa Donnelly and Karyn Drennap had .two points each. The Northwestern team won on the strength of good outside shooting. The Vikings' attack was ham- pered by many travelling calls which nullified their fast -break opportunities. The Vikings played in a tournament Saturday in London, and split a pair of games, defeating Medway 39-35, and losing to Luca 58- 29. Mona Gleason capitalized on opportunities set up by the Vikings' fast break against Medway, scoring 10 points.
