The Goderich Vikings will
be trying for their third
consecutive Huron -Perth
junior football championship
here Saturday when they
play the Listowel Lords at
1:30. The Vikings advanced
to the finals by defeating
Norwell 15-7 here Thursday.
Both the Norwell and
Goderich defences were
strong but it was probably
the success of the Viking
defence in causing more
turnovers that made the

difference in the game.
Norwell made it obvious
early in the game that they
had come to play, as they
took it to the Vikings in the
first quarter, striking for the
game's first touchdown.
Brian Metzger went over for
the major score on a 30 -yard
counter run. Dan Hill added
the convert, giving the
Redmen a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings began to move
the ball as the half moved on,
but could not finish off their
drives. Two field goal at-
tempts by Joe Melady
produced only one single
point, leaving the Vikings
down 7-1 at half-time. •
The Vdcings' defensive
coach Bill Garrow went to a
6-4 defence in the second half
and the adjustment paid off,
causing three turnovers at
key points in the game.
Fumble recoveries by
Andrew Telford and Joe
Medlady and an interception
by Geoff Chase gave the
Vikings field position from
which the offence could
ionship
move.
On the first play of the
fourth quarter, Ed Craig
scored the Vikings' first
touchdown on a two -yard
blast. Melady's convert gave
the Vikings the lead for the
first time in the game, 8-7.
The Redmen sagged after
that and with less than two
minutes left, Craig bulled his
way over the goal line for his
second touchdown. Meladv
was successful on the con-
verts, making the final score
15-7.
Viking offensive coor-
dinator Bruce Baker ex-
pressed the hope that the
Vikings would get off to a

Listowel here Saturday. The
Lords qualified for the finals
by downing Exeter 13-7 in the
other semi-final game
Thursday.

Lagers suffers first loss
BY TD
The GDCI junior girls
basketball team suffered
their first loss of the Huron-
Perth Conference schedule
in Stratford last Wednesday,
losing by a close 47-41 score
to Stratford Northwestern.
The VBtings were never
far behind, but were unable
to catch up to the Stratfojd
team. Northwestern • was
able to move the ball well
against the Viking press and
had- an effective -2-1-2 zone
defence which the Vikings
were unable to penetrate.
Viking coach Lynn Meyers
described Stratford's two top
scorers, Pat .Murray and
Andria Vidreiro, as "as good
as any we have seen all
year." Murray had 15 points
and Vidreiroadded 13.
Allison Graham, Kim
Fritzley, and Cathy Oke
were the Vikings' top point -
getters with 12 each.
Kristene Stapleton and
Angie Alcock added three .
apiece.
Meyers felt his Vikings
played well and did their
best throughout the game,
and feels that with a few
adjustments, his team can
make up the difference in
their next meetinglwith the
Stratford team.
The Vikings, with a 7-1
win -lost record, return to
action Wednesday in Exeter
and play Friday at home
against Clinton.
