BY THE REVEREND
ROBERT J. CROCKER
RECTOR
ST, GEORGE'S
ANGLICAN CHURCH
At Hallowe'en I• was
reminded that John Bunyan
in Pilgrim's Progress wrote:
"Hobgoblin, nor foul fiend
Can daunt his spirit.
The editors of modern
Irymnaries are not sure
about hobgoblins' and foul
fiends, so they rewrite the
two lines, "Since, Lord, thou
dost defend Us with thy
Spirit."
So doing, the editors may
be on strong theological
inister'y
ground in speaking about our
protection by God's Holy
Spirit. But they are less
picturesque, and certainly
avoiding a very human
problem.
Are we bedevilled by
various imps and ghostly
beings? Or, are they merely
the convenient per-
sonifications of evil in-
fluences in our lives? We
have a similar difficulty with.
angels at Christmas. Do we
take them seriously, or are
they just part of the seasonal
decor? What are we to
believe about such celestial
or demonic beings?
In our human experience,
we who are Christians have
felt the influence -cc God in
our lives, and the immediate
protection of his agencies. I
pray every night that he will
"send his Holy Angels to
keep watch over us". I know
that God has answered that
prayer.
But we also feel at times
the power of evil forcing us
in wrong ways. St. Paul
writes (Romans 7:19), "The
good that I would I do.not:
but the evil which I would
not, that do."
Psychologists used to talk
about the "id", the "it" of
our subconscious

motivation. It seems to
many Christians that the
powers, of evil have minds of
their own - free will, like our
own. And their will is to turn
us away from the path of
virtue.
It very often happens that
someone has had a won-
derful experience of God
working in his or her life, and
in the lives of other people,
but the experience is often a
short one. Something hap-
pens to spoil it. We are
discouraged - which. is just
what the devil wants. That is
what I mean by. evil having a
will of its own. And that, in
itself, is a personification of
such evil powers: only
persons have wills and
desires.
Sometimes we blame God
when we become ill, or some
tragedy happens to us. It
would be better to blame the
devil - or so it seems to me.
My guess, however, is that
much of the time it's our own
fault. It is so much easier to
blame something on
someone else.
It doesn't worry me very
much whether you personify
evil or not. I don't want you
to believe in the devil, even if
you know he exists. I do,
though, want you to believe
in God. And I want you to
believe in him as he is
revealed in Christ Jesus
who, whenhe had such an
experience as I have men-
tioned, said, "Get thee
hence, Satan."

Lay leaders. of Stratford
Deanery attend conference
More than 150 lay leaders
of ,the Stratford Deanery of
the Roman Catholic Church
attended a two-day teaching
conference in Goderich on
the weekend.
The delegates
,representing parishes in the
London Diocese, attended
two teaching sessions at
• Goderich District Collegiate
Institute Friday evening and
two more sessions were held
Saturday.
The teaching conference,
sponsored by the parishes in
the Huron -Perth district,
was the second in the series
of seven conferences. that
involve each deanery within
the diocese.
Father A.F. Loebach of St.
Peters Church Goderich
explained that the same
delegates attend every
teaching conference within.,
the diocese to prepare them
for roles as layleaders
within their parish.
While ' the teaching
sessions were attended by
Bishop Gervais and priests
and nuns 'from the deanery,
the aim of the conferences is
to create and reinforce
teaching skills of the.
Catholic faith.
"It is important for the
church to developlay
leaders," Father Loebach
said. "In a two-year survey
of the diocese on needs it was
indicated there was a need
for further and deeper un-
derstanding of the church
and teachings. Each deanery
has up to 20 members on the
lay team and each team will
attend all sessions."
The philosophy' behind the
teaching sessions is to
produce lay leaders well
versed on the teachings of
the church and thereby
provide a more consistent
approach. Other dioceses
have experimented with
weekend teaching sessions,
but the conferences in the
London Diocese marks the
first approach towards in-
volving the entire diocese.
The first teaching sessions
were held hi Tillsonburg and
future sessions will. move to
locations within the diocese.
In theory, the conferences
will produce teaching teams
"In theory, the deanery
teams will move to become
teams of teachers," Father
Loebach said. "Each group
will set up a work program
and set up courses in
scriptures and liturgy and
offer these course or lectures
in various parishes.
Hopefully the teams will hold
sessions once a week for
eight to ten weeks."
The parish lay leaders
could then be of assistance to
prepare others in the church
"for baptism, confirmation,
marriage and conversion to
the faith
