Five die in bridge washout
Five persons died Wed-
nesday after three vehicles
plunged nearly 30feet into a
creek that tore out a bridge
near Lion's Bay north of
Vancouver`.
A combination of heavy
rain and falling rock caused
the bridge to crumble and
three vehicles tumbled to the
muddy creek. Four people in
a van were killed and the
other known. victim was
riding in a car with four
others. -
One of the survivors was
Joe Chisholm, 21, a Calgary
salesman. Chisholm is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Don •;
Chisholm and the grandson
of Mr, and Mrs. Ben
Chisholm of Goderich.
Chisholm said he 'was -
driving on the bridge when it
began to "just crumble" in
front of them. He said there'
was nowhere to go and
nothing to do, the car was
simply out in the air.
Chisholm and three of his
passengers found 'them-
selves alive but almost
buried in a swirling mud
bath of creek debris. He was
unable to recall how he freed
himself from the wreck but
_ three passengers made an
escape through the smashed
back window.
Chisholm suffered a
broken nose and was
scheduled to have surgery in
a British Columbia hospital.

Dear Editor,
Could you please publish
the following item now that
the children are back in
school.
"PLEASE DON'T
HURT MY
LITTLE GIRL"
Dear Driver:
Today my daughter who is
seven years old, started to
school as usual. She wore a
dark blue dress with a white
collar. She had on black
shoes and wore blue. gloves.
GODERICH,SIGNAL't5TAR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4,1981 --PAGE 5
travel with c. uti
Her cocker -spaniel whose
name is "Scoot", sat on the
front porch and whined his
canine belief in the folly of
education as she waved
"goodbye" and started off to
the halls of learning.
Tonight we talked about
school. She told me about the
girl who sits in front of her -
the girl with yellow curls -
and the boy across the aisle
who makes funny faces. She
told me about her teacher,
who has eyes in the back of.
her head- and about the
trees in the school yard -
and about the big girl who
doesn't believe in Santa
Claus. We talked about a lot
of things - tremendously
vital, unimportant things
then we studied spelling,
reading and arithmetic , -
then to bed.
She's back there now -
back in the nursery - sound
asleep, with "Princess
Elizabeth" (that's a doll)
cuddled in her right arm.
You guys wouldn't hurt her,
would ,rou? You see,' I'm her
daddy. When her doll is
broken or her finger is cut,
or her head gets bumped, I
can fix it - but when she
starts to school, when she
walks across the street, then
she's in your hands.
She's. a nice kid. She can.
run like a deer and darts
about lake a chipmunk. She
likes to ride horses and swim
and hike with me on Sunday
afternoons. But I can't be
with her all the time - I have
to work to pay for her clothes
and her education. So please
Must town collect leaves on Saturday
Dear Editor:
It's 7:15 on a Saturday
morning. My day off! What
am I doing awake? The leaf
machine just awoke me
while sucking up the leaves
at the house across the
street.
As a taxpayer, I wonder
why the Town is paying to
suck up leaves on a Saturday
when surely the men are
paid a premium rate. As I
contemplate the matter
further, I think back to when
I was the age of my sons -
and even when I was a
teenager. I would help my
dad rake the leaves and then
we would burn them.
I was talking to a friend
yesterday who recently
moved to Goderich. In the
town where she lived - not far
from Toronto - the residents
still gather and burn their
own leaves. Then I wonder
why we can't do the same in
Goderich. We all know that
the Town is looking for ways
to trim expenditures.
Surely no one objects to the
smoke in the Town. The
. aroma is wonderful and the
Saturday morning silence
would not be jarred by the
leaf machine!

some of the faces shown in

Signallers of the 29th, were
also in the Signalling Sec-

eo-tions of various Battalions
during the 1914-1918 War, but
the features, not knowing the
names etc.. are now too dark
for careful examination. Age

Some few years ago you
had a photo of the Signal Sec-

I was a privileged member.
This is all the information
I can give you at the pre-

you to knowthat the Signal -
