My wife and I were eating
in a little restaurant about
100 miles from here one
night when we noticed a
young man watching me.
When I looked at him, he
smiled as though he knew
me. So I asked him if we had.
met.
"No" he replied, "but I
think I've seen your picture
in the Goderich paper.
Aren't you the one who
writes •articles for the
Minister's Study? Your ar-
ticles are always about life,
not religion."
As I left the restaurant and
drove home, I wondered if 1
had given the impression
that life and religion are two
completely separate things.
I believe this young man
didn't mean it that way. But
there are those of us who
profess to be Christian who
do feel we can separate life
from religion, that we can
separate our daily living
from the practice of religion.
We become Sunday Chris -

tians only. We cover
ourselves with a thin veneer
of Christianity, just enough
to feel respectable but not
enough to ever cause us any
discomfort.
Even my Webster's dic-
tionary recognizes that the
two are inseparable for it
says this: religion is a belief
in a divine power to be
obeyed and worshipped as
creator and ruler of the
universe, and the expression
of this belief in conduct and
ritual.
Surely everyone who reads
this must believe in a divine
power. How can we dot
believe at this time of year
when we see the maple trees
standing with great bare
arms again, seemingly
dead; when we see the water
in the rain puddles turn to ice
overnight and back to water
the next day; when we see
great flocks of geese flying
unerringly southward?
There has to be a power
greater than any human
power that controls this
universe.
And belief m this Power, in
God as it is called by Chris-
tians and Jews, must result
in a change in the conduct of
those who . believe. We are
called to obey this God, this
God who became man in the
form of Jesus, who lived
among men and taught us
how we are expected to live.
In Luke 9:23 we read: If
anyone wants to come with
me, he must forget himself,
and take up his cross daily,
and follow me.
When .did you last ask
yourself, am 1 really a Chris-
tian? Do I take up Christ's
cross every day? When I saw
an injustice being done to so-
meone at work last week, did
I remain silent or did I speak
out in support of that person
even though it put me in

danger of losing my own
job? Do I know that a child is
being abused but say nothing
because of fear for my own
well-being?
No, being a Christian is not
easy. It challenges us in our
daily life and work to give up
personal desires and per-
sonal fears and to live for
others.
In our world today where
we have political strife, often
for personal gain; where we
have strikes and riots and
outright defiance of the law;
where we have poverty and
hunger and death; and
where we see the
unrighteous prospering
materially; it seems almost
absurd to go on striving to
live a life of love, a life of
unselfish service to others,
often at no gain to ourselves.
But that's what our religion,
our belief in God, demands
of us every day.
But in spite of these
demands, I don't believe we
are being asked to do an
unreasonable .thing. To me,
our God through Jesus
Christ, is simply asking us to
make every day one of ser-
vice to others and surely if
we do our work, no matter
what it is, honestly and well,
we are serving others. He is
asking us to build Christian
homes where the burdens of
life are shared in love by
everyone living in that
home. He is asking that, by
the way in which we live our
own lives, we radiate the
gospel message of love to all
we meet in our regular daily
relationships.
In these ways, religion and
life become inseparable and
truly meaningful. Through it
all, we cliacOver our true
identity, we " disover our
purpose for being, and we
will find that we have peace
in our hearts.
