(2 miles south of Varna on Stanley Sideroad No. 10) 1-262-3318 Senior Vikings close season with win BY TD The GDCI Senior Vikings closed out their Huron -Perth Conference football schedule Thursday with a 16-0 victory over the Stratford Nor- thwestern Huskies. The Vik- ings finished with a record of four wins and one loss, good for second place in the final standings, behind undefeated Exeter South Huron. The game in Stratford was a mud bowl and both teams were limited in what they could do. The game featured many fumbles and even the running games of the two teams were not effective in the slippery conditions. Darryl Beattie went 35 yards on a pass and run play on a pass from quarterback Dave MacDonald for a first quarter touchdown for the Vikings. The Vikes added a two-point safety touch in the second quarter to make the half-time score 9-0. . Beattie got his second touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter on a 15 yard reverse. Rob Plunkett was suc- cessful on both Viking con- vert attempts. Because of a three-way tie for fourth place in the final standings involving Listowel, Northwestern and Norwell, the Huron Pertt Conference playoffs will in• volve all six senior teams. The Vikings played their first round playoff gamt here Tuesday against the Listowel Lords, If they were successful in defeating the Lords, the' Vikings will play here Thursday in the semi- final action against the win- ner of the Norwell - Northwestern playoff game which was also Tuesday. The senior game here Thursday would follow the junior Vik- ings 1 p.m. semi-final versus Norwell. The winner of Thursday's senior semi-final will ad- vance to play the victor of the Stratford Central - Ex- eter semi-final. The Huron - Perth finals will be played on Saturday, November 7. Junior Gagers still unbeaten BY TD The GDCI junior girls basketball team remained unbeaten in league play by defeating St. Marys 60 - 44 in St. Marys Thursday. The win was the Vikings' seventh straight. Allison Graham and Kim Fritzley got 18 and 17 points respectively to lead the Vikings. Six of the Goderich run- ners will compete in the WOSSA meet in Alvinston Friday.. Jackie Dalton won the senior girls' event while Deb Mitchelmore finished second in the junior girls' division. Sharon Lomas was fifth, John Van Den Broek sixth, Andrew Carruthers seventh and Charlene Taylor eighth in their respective races. The top teams in the leagues in which the Kitchener officials work are invited to the tournament. The first team the Vikings faced was Elmira. This tall, well - drilled team led the Vikings 37 - 17 at halftime, but the Vikes narrowed the gap to a one point margin, 41-40 with three minutes left in the game. The Vikings inability to score from beyond 12 feet showed up and they were unable to get the steals they depend on to produce the layups they , need to make. Elmira surged ahead in the last minute to win 52 - 43. The Vikings came up against a tough Kitchener Cameron Heights squad in their second game. In the first quarter, the GDCI starters got behind by eight/ In the second quarter the second team dropped , another 10 points behind. • The starters returned to the floor in the third quarter and got going enough to reduce Kit- chener's Iead to nine points. Coach Meyers , gave his rookies the floor in the final quarter. and they were unable to stay. ,, w.th they Kitchener team iatiich won by a 66 -44 score. The van clinics in town.( Photo by Dave Sykes) featured books films and video tape presentations on all Lions Pee Wees show promise The Goderich Lions Pee Wee's opened their Shamrock League schedule last week with a tough three games in four nights with a win over Exeter and losses to Parkhill and St. Marys. In these games the Lions showed a lot of promise and with the heavy scheduling already behind them, the Lions will be a strong team in the league. • In the league opener at Exeter last Wednesday; the Lions scored in all three periods, corning home with an 8 - 4 win. The passing game was the strong point for Goderich and the scoring statistics bear this out. - Bill Trebish - two goals, one assist, Shawn Larder - two 'goals,one. assist, Scott Garrow - one goal, three assists, Ryan Kelly - one goal, one assist, Mark Cauchi - one goal, one assist, David Brown - one goal, Tod Nurse - two assists and Darren Stanbury - one assist. Have 6-1 record The Lions led 3 - 1 after the first period, 4 2 after the second, doubling their output in the third. Each team received only one minor penalty in this fast paced game, On Friday night, the lions suffered their first loss of the season being edged by Parkhill 6 - 5. Goderich was rolling along pretty good and for their efforts had a 3 - 0 lead until the last minute of the second period when Parkhill got on the score board. The third period Oltimers win The Goderich OIdtimers continue to look impressive in exhibition play and added two more wins to their totals this week. On Saturday the Oldtimers played in Forest and escaped with a 6-5 win and here Sunday they blasted the Zurich Has Beans 15-1. The Goderich Oldtimers scored two goals in the first period against Zurich but broke the game open with six goals in the second period and outscored the Has Beans 7-1 in the final period. Don Masse led the of- fensive attack with • four goals and team-mate Wayne Doak added three goals. Larry Boyd and Harvey Livingston scored two goals apiece for Goderich and Dave Wilkinson, Don Freeman and Buck Million chipped in with one goal apiece. Bob Merrier, scored the only Zurich goal in the final period. This Sunday the Goderich Oldtimers will host. the Sarnia Old Oilers.' Game time is8.p.m. turned out to be disastrous for the locals as Parkhill took leads of 4 3, and 6 - 4 before clinching it. Scott Garrow led the Lion offence with two goals and an assist. Ryan Kelly, Mark Cauchi and Shawn Larder each had a goal and assist while Tim Wilson drew two assists. The referees made it tough on both ' teams • calling 26 minutes in penalties. In the home opener last Saturday, the St. Marys Pee Wees scored five times in the third period to defeat the Lions 8-3. St. Marys led 2-1 'after the first period and 3 - 2 at the end of the second before breaking the game open in the third. Scott Garrow notched all three Lions' goals while assists went to Bill Trebish with two and David Brown and Shawn. Larder each one. The ,.next league play for the Lions will be November 7 at home against Ilderton and November 8 in Lucan. Seniors coast to easy 65-18 victory BY TD The GDCI senior girls' basketball team had an easy 65 -18 victory over St. Marys Thursday in Huron -Perth Conference play. The victory gives the Vikings a 6 -1, won - lost record in league play. The. Vikings got a well- balanced scoring output, with nine players hitting the scoresheet. Sonja Lapaine, with 14 points, and Tracey MacEwan, with 13, led the offence. Patti Botz added nine, Robin MacDonald had eight points and Mary O'Neill and Mona Gleason had six apiece. O'Neill, Drennan, Lapaine and MacEwan were the leading rebounders for the Vikings. The Vikings played in the annual West Hill tournament in Owen Sound Saturday, winning 25 - 17 over the host team, but losing 51 - 41 to Collingwood in second round action. After a slow start against West Hill, the Vikings used their height advantage and took control of the game. The Vikings got off to a slow start against Collingwood 'but came back to tie the score by the end of the first quarter. Led by the play of Mary O'Neill, the Vikings moved into an eight point lead by half-time. The third quarter was a disaster for the Vikings. They were unable to handle an aggressive press put on them by the Collingwood team, and turned over the bau on numerous occasions. Although the Vikings made a recovery in the final quarter, they were unable to over- come the deficit and lost by 10 points. Selina Conklin led Collingwood with 14 pants. Mary O'Neill had 12 points for Goderich. Andrea DeWinter and Sonja Lapaine had five points each. Karyn Drennan, Robin MacDonald and Patti Botz had four each, Tracey MacEwan had three and Mona Gleason and Barb Conlon had two points each.
