Ed Craig runs 1O' 'Oth yard
Viking rookies show their stuff
BY TD
The GDCI junior Vikings
finished the Huron -Perth
Conference football schedule
undefeated, winning their
seventh consecutive game in
an easy 42 - 0 romp over the
hapless Wingham Mustangs
here Thursday.
The Vikings have amassed
a total of 222 points while
giving up only 20 over the
season. The undefeated
season is the third for Bill
Garrow's Vikings in the last
four years. But as his
assistant coach Bruce Baker
points out, "The record
means nothing if we let up
Thursday here in our semi-
final match -up with Nor-
well."
The game against Norwell
will be part of a junior -senior
double-header playoff, with
the Viking -Norwell game at 1
p.m., followed by the senior
semi-final at approximately
2:30.
Ed Craig reached the 1000
yard individual rushing
mark for the season during
the second quarter of the
game against Wingham.
Craig accounted for two
touchdowns, one in the first
quarter on a six yard dive,
the other on a 48 yard sweep
in the second quarter.
Rookie back Doug
Lounsbury replaced Craig,
who was rested by the Viking
coaches after his landmark
performance. Lounsbury,
one of the many 14 year olds
who just keep getting better
for the Vikings, rushed for
over 150 yards in the
remainder of the game and
scored a second quarter
touchdown on, a four yard
dive.
Grant Garrow's touch-
down on a 12 yard reverse
late in the quarter gave the
Vikings a 27 - 0 half-time
lead.
In the second half, the
Vikings added two more
majors. Pete Stahl went over
on a three yard dive and
John Thompson scored on a
two yard quarter -back
sneak. Joe Melady kicked
converts for two of the
Viking touchdowns and ran
the ball for two other two -
Volleyball
Six wins - no losses
Six wins - no losses. That's
how the junior/ boys'
volleyball team returned to.
Goderich last Wednesday
from . tournament action in
St. Marys, having pulled out
of their mid-season blahs of
two wins - four losses last
week. Maybe it was the new
uniforms, maybe the in-
creased floor spirit and
determination; or maybe it
was the weather.
Whatever it was, coach
Cloet was obviously happy
with his boys' performance
in regaining their second
place berth in the Con-
ference, now only two points
behind Listowel.
The Vikes' first match
against St. Marys proved to
be a tougher contest than
was expected as the St.
Marys Soulikas racked up
early points in using the
home court advantage, but
the strong vocal actions of
Kent Feagan got the show on
the road claiming the first
victory of the day 15-9.
In the second game, the St.
Marys team put up an even
stronger fight and a long,
hard match ensued to be won
by the Vikes 16-14. With a
good rest between games,
the Vikings were well
prepared to pound Clinton in
an attempt to retrieve a
disastrous 15-2 drubbing last
week and showed that they
definitely can be number one
with 15-5 and 15-8 victories
over the Redmen.
The third and final match
pitted the boys against an in-
experienced but determined
Norwell Club which has only
two victories this year. The
Norwell team actually did
very well , against Goderich
even with losses of 15-5 and
15-11 and could be a power
next season.
One more tournament will
complete the regular season
play and that is in Mitchell
Thursday when the Vikings
will meet St. Marys and
Madill a second time and
Stratford Central for the.
first time. The 30 -game un-
balanced schedule will end
at this time, the top six
teams moving on to the
Huron -Perth playdowns on
November 4 in Mitchell.
Atoms two and one
The Goderich Machinist
Atoms started off their
Shamrock League hockey
season on the weekend with
two wins and one loss.
On Friday evening, the
Atoms travelled to Parkhill
where they won with a score
of 10-4. Tim Harrison led the
Goderich boys with seven
goals. Greg Alcock got two
goals and one assist and
George Sideris contributed
one goal. Greg DeWinter got
two assists and Blair Water -
field got one. Pat Donnelly
was in net for Goderich.
Goderich got a two . goal
lead quickly in the game but
Parkhill tied things up
within . a few minutes.
Goderich took the lead again
before the end of the first
period- and dominated the
final two periods.
.At home on Saturday,
Goderich lost 5-1 against a
strong St. Marys team. An-
dre Cauchi robbed the St.
Marys net minder of a shut-
out with his goal in the third
period on an assist from
Greg Alcock. Justin Fagan
played an excellent game in
net for Goderich and
prevented the score from be-
ing more lop -sided.
On Sunday afternoon, the
Goderich team made up. for
Saturday's loss when they
travelled to Exeter and
played their best game of the
weekend.
Although Exeter opened
up the scoring in the first
period, Goderich tied things
up in the second period and
added two more goals in the
third period to end the game
with a score of 3-1.
Richard Bowman led the
scoring for Goderich with
two goals and Jeff Boyce
scored. the other one. Boyce
also got an assist and Jeff
Hodges had two assists. Pat
Donnelly played , a solid
game in net for Goderich.
The Goderich Atoms will
travel to Lucan to play this
Saturday. This year's Atoms
coach is Steve Buchanan
again and the new manager
is Bob Dempsey.
Sailors open Friday
The Goderich Sailors begin
their OHA Intermediate C
season this Friday with a
home opener against the
Mildmay Monarchs. Game
time is 8.30 p.m. at the
Goderich and District
Memorial Community
Centre.
The 1981-82 version of the
Sailors features many new
faces. There has also been a
change in the league since
the Lucknow Lancers have
been forced to withdraw
from the league.
In exhibition play last
week Goderich defeated
Lucknow 10-6 in a game that
will mark the last contest
between the bitter rivals.

point conversions.
The Viking defence was
strong, with strong line play
and linebacker support. Jeff
LeBeau had an interception.
The Vikings' victory over
Wingham was ' their second
of the week. Tuesday, the
Vikes defeated the
previously unbeaten
Listowel Lords, 16 - 1. Pete
Stahl returned the opening
kick -Off to the Listowel 38
yard line. Some tough
running and blocking up the
middle led to an Ed Craig
touchdown which was
converted by Joe Melady.
The game quickly settled
in to a tough defensive
struggle. Hurricane -like
winds dictated a field
position battle.
= In the second quarter
Listowel conceded a safety
touch, giving the Vikings a 9
0 halftime lead. ,Andrew
Telford kicked a 67 yard
single in the third quarter.
The Lords got on the
scoreboard, kicking a 55
yard single in the fourth
'quarter. Ed Craig broke
through for an eight yard
touchdown late in the
quarter to give the Vikings
their 15 point margin of
victory.
The Viking defence played
a spirited game, coming up
with big plays whenever
Listowel appeared to
threaten. Pete Willems had
an interception and Joe
Melady had a fumble
recovery.
