Education
in trouble
BYJACK RIDDELL,
M.P,P.
This past summer, the
govermnent was told by its
own advisory committee
that it must either
• dramatically increase
university funding or face
the closure of several
universities and the drastic
curtailment of programs at
several otter institutions.
According to the com-
mittee, the underlying
problem is the,goveriunent's
failure to Provide 'adequate
funding' for universities. For
example, in 1977 the
province paid 18 per gent of
the cost of University
programs and ' support
Services. This year, . the
province Wffi pay only five
per cent with the federal
government and student
tuitionpaying the rest.
. The current crisis in
university funding is proving
to be the main topic of
discussion as Liberal

'also- be included in the tour,
although the actual date of
this visit is not yet finalized.
At each stop on the tour to
date, it has been abundantly
clear that students and
faculty alike are very
worried indeed about the
current funding situation. All
agree that the "crunch" will
come in the next financial
year.
In Windsor, Wrye was told
that the university would use
up all its reserve funding this
year in the hope of avoiding
getting into a deficit
situation. When all reserves
are depleted, it will be faced
with the choice of either
running a deficit or making
drastic cutbacks.
Over the last four years, it
has reduced its maintenance
staff while at the same time
expanding its building
capacity size by 30 per cent.
In fact, it has cut -to -the -bone
financially in all non-
academic areas.
Trent, the next stop on the
tour, is a comparatively
small university which is
already operating on a
deficit. Faculty and students
are very seriously concerned
indeed about future funding
and about the consequences
of insufficient financial
resources for the university
in generaL
Carleton University is also
running a deficit -in the
region of $700,000 for this
year.
• This campus has already
suffered so much due to
underfunding, that it has
been forced to cut both
support and teaching staff.
The building maintenance is
at an all-time low. It has cut
back on library services.
Much of the plant and
equipment is obsolete„ and
needs to be replaced.
• financial difficulties are a
direct result of underfunding
