record left the Vikings tied
with the Listowel Lords, who
had a similar record going
into • Tuesday's matchup
between the two teams in
Listowel.
The Vikings have one
game remaining in regular
season play against

The 28-0 score over Exeter
was a bit misleading as the
game was a hard-hitting
well -played affair,but the
Vikings came up with a
strong effort both offensively
and defensively, and out-
classed the Panthers in the
specialty team department.
The Vikings led 8-0 after
the first half. Ed Craig, the
Vikings' premier running
back, went over on a three
yard dive in the first quarter.

Defensively, the Vikings
were successful In shutting
down the usually effective
Panther sweep plays and
inside running game. The
Panthers, were limited to
only nine first downs and
were never able to penetrate
the Goderich 40 yard line.
Viking gang -tackling
produced five turnovers.
Geoff Chase and John
Thompson intercepted
passes, Lee Frisby, Dave
Weaver and Dave Smith
combined to block two
Exeter kicks and Weaver
had a fumble recovery.
Tennis team does well
The Western Ontario
Tennis championships took
place in Tillsonburg last
Thursday. Ten Goderich
athletes travelled to compete
against tennis players from
London, Lambt`on, Mid-
dlesex and Oxford -Elgin.
Marg and Barb Conlan
defeated teams from Sarnia
and London before losing in
the final to the Hatch sisters
from London. Tracey
MacEwan and Natalie Sully
won their first match before
losing in the semi-finals to
the -Hatch sisters.
In mixed doubles action,
John Peters and Mary Beth
Alexander defeated teams
from Tillsonburg and Sarnia
before losing in the semi-
finals to a strong London
team. Dave Willis and Lori
Hassall received a first
round hope, and then lost in
the quarter finals.
Helen Conlan won her first
match. She lost in the semi-
final to a strong London
competitor.

The level of competition
was extremely high with
several of Canada's top rank
juniors competing in the
tournament.Coach Bob Dick
was very pleased 'with the
performance of the Goderich
athletes.
