Jan Rubes to perform at Blyth Few performers in Canada have had a more varied background in the entertain- ment field than Jan Rubes and all of his talents will be on view when'he presents An Afternoon with Jan Rubes at Blyth Memorial Hall, Sun- day, October.25 at 2 p.m. Since adopting Canada as his home, Mr. Rubes has been a television and stage star as a serious actor, a folk singer, opera singer and musical comedy star. He has particularly been interested in working, with young peo- ple and has spent many thousands of hours doing concerts in schools. In the last year, Mr. Rubes has made several ap- pearances in CBC television dramas as well as starring in productions such as Man of LaMancha, The Sound of Music and South Pacific in Toronto dinner theatres. His relaxed, informal stage presence and sense of humour quickly warms any audience. In a few words and actions he can change ap- pearance and mood for a song from the hit musical Man of LaMancha or set up a delightful European folk song. An Afternoon with Jan Rubes is the first of the 1981- 82 winter music series , at Blyth Centre for the Arts. Tickets for the entire series featuring The Messiah, per- formed by the Tafelmusik orchestra and choir, Liona Boyd and John Arpin are still available for only $18, a saving of $10 over the regular individually priced' tickets. Tickets for the Jan Rubes concert are in- dividually available at only $6 - The Sunday afternoon con- cert is the final event in a hectic weekend of activity at Blyth Centre for the Arts. The Gala Weekend to help pay off the remaining debt from the Blyth Memorial Hall building program will begin Friday evening Board approves... • from page 10A evaluate the: current collec- tion of materials ' and • con=• sider reputable, unbiased, commercial selection aids, professional reviews, recom- mendations from 4 school 'staff and community, recommended lists from the support staff and „display materials. In special cases the teacher -librarian should evaluate gift materials and accept or reject according to selectioncriteria, damaged, and missingstandard items should be replaced every so often, and out-of-date or redundant items •should be • withdrawn from the collec- tion. In its policy, the board has recognized that occasional objections to the materials May arise. The policy 'gives direction for any • "challenges" made. First, any "challenge" is referred to the school prin- cipal. Those making, the challenge must be identified along with the reasons then the principal discusses the reasons with relevant staff. members. The principal then reports .back to those who made. the "challenge" with a decision. If the challenger remains unsatisfied, a formal recon- sideration of the material may be requested. In a for- mal reconsideration, a sign- ed form is given to the direc- tor of education and in turn passed on to the reconsidera- tion committee. The recon- sideration committee makes a decision after reviewing in- formation. The decision of that com- ' mittee may be appealed to the school board which is the final level of review. In other business, the board awarded the contract to supply number two fur- nace fuel oil to the necessary schools, except Sacred Heart School in Wingham, at the price of .2215 cents per litre. and for Wingham. .2245 cents per litre. The board also granted ap- proval to the Kinkora Parent stall playground equipment to board specification at St. Patrick's School, Ktnkora with all costs to be absorbed by the PTA.
