IW TD
The GDCI junior Vikings
defeated the Stratford
Northwestern Huskies 21-7 in
Huron -Perth Conference
football action m Stratford
last Tuesday.
The game was decided by
the superiority of the Viking
defence. Weather conditions
were not favourable for
offensive success and a
strong wind dictated field
position throughout the
afternoon.
The Vikings fell behind in
the early' going as the
Huskies moved m front 7-0 on
a first quarter single and a
second quarter unconverted
touchdown. This represented
the first time this season that
the Vikes had to come from
behind. They tied the score
by halftime on the strength
of a 27 yard touchdown run
by Geoff Chase on a reverse
on the last play of the half.
Joe Melady kicked the
convert.
Northwestern chose the
wind in the third quarter but
got stuck deep in their own
end after a good Viking
kickoff and a strong
defensive stand. A bad snap
from (centre resulted i'n a
blocked Husky punt and
gave the Vikings possession
on the Northwestern 22 yard
line. The Vikings used a new
trap play to score the go-
ahead touchdown by Paul
McCartney.Melady con-
verted.
The final Viking touch-
down came in the fourth
quarter on a pass from
quarterback John Thompson
to Trevor Erb. Melady,
proving he can kick converts
as well as block them, was
successful again.
The Vikings, playing their
second game of the week
blasted Clinton here Thur-
sday, 45-6. The Vikes left
little doubt about the out-
come by scoring three first
quarter touchdowns. ,Ed
Craig went 36 yards on a
sweep, Pete Stahl went over
on a two yard drive and Paul
McCartney ran 25 yards on a
sweep for the"majors.
Clinton got one touchdown
back in the second quarter
but Ed Craig restored the
Viking point spread on a two -
yard drive play later in the
quarter. The only scoring in
the third quarter was a 12
yard field goal kicked by Joe
Melady. Vikings coach
Bruce Baker said the field
goal was the first he has seen
in a junior game in his six
years as a coach. Melady
also booted four converts to
give himself a seven point
game.
Andrew Telford proved his
versatility by running the
ball well and going over on a
two yard dive play m a third
quarter march by the
Vikings. Lee Frisby finished
off another Viking drive with
a four yard run late in the
final quarter. A two point
conversion on a pass from
John Thompson to Ed Craig
proved to be the final scoring
play of the game.
The Viking defence ef-
fectively shut down the
Clinton offense. Ed Craig
was the game's leading
rusher with 231 yards before
coming out in the third
quarter. Jeff Lebeau
quarter -backed most of the
second half and gained
valuable experience at that
position. All of the Vikings
got lots of playing time as
coaches Garrow and Baker
substituted freely in the
second half.
Pete Willems, John
Thompson and Geoff Chase
had interceptions and Lee
Frisby recovered a fumble
for the Vikings.,

pass attempt in junior action against Clinton here Thur-
sday. Goderich won the game.( Photo by Dave Sykes)
