With regards to Councillor Haydon's letter Mille Signal - Star. I will make a few com- ments, short and to the point. At no time have I called anyone dishonest or a cheat. My only concern was and still is, the lack of good judgement on their behalf. As far as my attempting to discredit anyone, that can only be achieved by the per- son herself. Yes I was silent at council when the account in, question., was approved. However, the public may not be aware that all accounts approved at council have already been paid. There is little sense, therefore, in objecting. In the past I have questioned large • amounts of money spent, however the press has chosen not to pant my com- ments. -I have been called un- businesslike and unproduc-. • tive. If this is what you are called for trying to save tax dollars, then I plead guilty. , All of the remarks by Councillor Haydon against. me do not necessarily reflect that of the general public. I will continue to do as I have in the past and let the tax- payer be the judge. One member of council seems to forget that the taxpayer of Goderichis our boss, and if I am. wrong she or he will not hesitate in telling me. 'Last year when I made public the expenses of each council member Haydon said her on- ly regret was she was not number one. .Well in my mind there is no doubt she will achieve that ambition this year. Jim Searls. ouls don't go to heaven Dear Editor, Recently, on CFPL televi- sion in the- program FYI, there occurred a discussion series which indicated that most `Christians' believe that, at death, the soul leaves the. body, the good `souls' going to Heaven and the' `souls' not so good go elsewhere; at any rate, they believe that they do not "really die". (Genesis 3:4) The early Christian chur-" chman, Justin Martyr made the statement "If you have fallen in with some who are called Christians ... who say that their souls, when they die are taken. to heaven, do not imagine that they are Christians." .• Concerning this state- ment, John Dunnett; senior lecturer in Theology at. Newbold College, had this to say: "The early Church Fathers, basing their beliefs 'on Holy Scripture... were under no illusion as to the ex- perience of man, even a Christian,in death. They understood death to be an unconscious state, a 'sleep' from, which there • would eventually be a resurrection. It was said repeatedly of Old Testament kings that they slept with their fathers. The Psalmist described death thus: "He breathes his last breath; he returns to the dust; and in that same .flour all his thinking ends." Psalm 146:4 New English Bible) So it was that not. only Justin Martyr and Irenaeus but also Ignatius, Polycarp, Lactantius and other early Fathers could not hold that Christian souls are taken to heaven when they die. It was under the influence of Platonic philosophy ...that the concept of the immortali- ty of the soul came largely to permeate the Christian Church to make 'acceptable the idea that souls go to 'heaven at death; but it re- mains a non -Biblical belief. Can it be said then, that most "Christians" today are Scripturally identified as "heretics"? (Ezekiel 18:4,20 Sincerely, C.F. Barney,' Clinton.
