HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-09-30, Page 11II Senior cagers win first league game in Listowel BY TD The GDCI junior girls basketball team romped to an easy 56-23 victory in the opening game of their Huron -Perth .conference schedule in Listowel Thursday. Coach Lynn Meyers' Vikings were never challenged by the Listowel team- and Meyers made liberal use ofhis bench throughout the game. Kim Fritzley had 22 points for the winners and Allison Graham added 14. ° Nancy Bugler and Anne Allan each contributed six points while Angie Alcock and Mary Beth Alexander had two apiece. Cathy Oke had one point. Nex) league action for the junior Vikings is Thursday here when Seaforth will be the visitors. The Vikings will be hosting their annual tournament here Saturday and play in the first game at 9 a.m. against Sarnia Collegiate. Other teams taking part in the eight team tourney in- s clude Strathroy, London ndon Oakridge, Medway, Strat- ford Central, Kitchener, St. Marys and London Mont - calm. Actioncontinues throughout the day with the consolation final set for 7 p.m. and the championship final going at 8:15. Tennis players finish strongly The Goderich tennis team competed in the Huron -Perth tennis championships last week in Stratford. In girls singles, Helen Conlon played excellent tennis to win the Cham- pionship for the second year in a row. In girls doubles, Marg and Barb' Conlon defeated Tracy MacEwan and Natalie Sully in an, all- Goderich final.. . Tracy and Natalie had won two matches to reach the final. This is the fith year in a row that Marg Conlon has been a H -P champion. She has won championships in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, an outstanding record In mixed doubles, Dave Willis and Lori Hassal won the championship. John Peters and Mary Alexander were the runners-up in .this event after defeating the Stratford team in a challenge match. In, boys singles, Peter Conlon Lost in the semi-final to the champion from Stratford but gained the right to go to the Western Ontario championships by defeating the loser, of the final in a challenge match. The above competitors who finished first or second in their event will travel to Tillsonburg on October 14 to compete in the WOSSA championships. Other members of the Goderich team were Mike Cox, Susan Thompson, Griff Murphy, Doug Ryan, Willie Denomme, and Jim Fritzley. In spite of winning three of the five events and finishing second in three of the five events, Goderich lost the team championship to Stratford Central by two points 15-13. Bob Dick coached the GDCI team. Golfers finish third The GDCI golf team finished third in the Huron - Perth golf championships held in Listowel last Thur- sday. The team from Seaforth High ; School won the championship `while Stratford Northwestern finished second. Del Mitchelmore topped the GDCI team. Mike Paquette, John Alexander and Mike Murphy were the other GDCI learn members. George Sutton acted as coach of the GDCI team. Sailors have try -outs The Goderich.Saildrs OHA Intermediate C hockey club will be starting tryout practices for the 1981-82 team when the ice is com- pleted in the Goderich arena. TheSailorsare in the same . • group as last season in- cluding Lucknow, Wingham, Harriston, Mildmay, ' Mt. Forest and a new team from Southhampton; The . new season is ex- pected to start in the latter part of October. Ron Brown will be handling thecoaching duties this year. Since there aren't many players returning there wilI'be lots of positions to fill. Goderich Bridge Club scores Helen Tench and John . had 51 percent. Wood combined for a total of 65 per cent to top the North- Jean Cook and Jean South division of play at the Papernick were first in 'the September 22 meeting of the East-West section , with 59 Goderich Bridge Club.
