Save some
garden
You don't have to lose all
of your garden plants to
autumn frosts. Save some
for next year's garden by
taking cuttings now, says
Bob Fleming, - Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture arid
Food horticulturist.
Save money next year by
taking cuttings of geraniums
and coleus now," he says.
"Select healthy' cuttings,
break them at the joints, and
remove damaged or
diseased foliage."
For best results, root the
cuttings in a mixture of
.equal parts of.sarid and peat
moss. • Stick,. the ciyttings
firmly into the mixture.
Water just enough to moisten
the growing medium
Place the cuttings in a
sunny location for three to.
four weeks. Once the fibrous
roots appear, the plants can
be transplanted into pots.
Transplanted cuttings grow
best , in a cool, bright win-
dowsill during the winter.
Chives, parsley and dwarf
herbs can also be moved
indoors for the autumn and
winter months to provide an
indoor supply of herbs to
accent salads and meat
dishes.
Dig a small section of
chives in the garden, taking
care ,to ,lig around the, out-
side of the plant to prevent
root daniage. Lift the section
and plant in a flower pot of
regular potting soil. Water
after putting to stimulate
new gr owth.
Parsley, basil, rose -nary
and other small herbs can be
moved indoors,by replanting
in flower pots. The only
