Emphasize membership during Legion week
BY NEIL SHAW
This week, as Goderich
Legion Branch 109 marks
Legion Week (Sept. 20 to 26),
the emphasis is on member-
ship.
Each Branch of the
Legion, as chartered by
Dominion Command in Ot-
tawa, is allowed to have five
classes of membership, The
first class is ordinary
(regular) membership. This
class is open to those (male
or female) who served in
World War I or II or the
Korean War or any Allied,
forces; to\those who have.
completed two years in the
Canadian . forces, active or
militia (serving personnel
are active service associate
members); the RCMP; Mer-
cantile marine or Merchant
Navy. Two years served in
the O.F.0 or CS of C also
makes one eligible for
Legion membership.
Associate class membership
is open to any son or
daughter of a Legion
member or veteran who is
eligible to join the Legion. .
Legion Branches :have
three other classes. of
membership Fraternal
associates (social member-
ship for those who support
the program of the Branch
with active work) and
Honorary and Life member-
ships. As of August 31, 1981,
Branch 109 had a total of 825
members. -
Canada has over 700,000
living war veterans of which
275,000 are today members
of the Royal Canadian
Legion. As the average age
of a World War veteran" is
now' over 60 years, 'the
Legion in Canada is ex-
periencing a rising decline in
the number of veteran or or-
dinary members. During
Legion Week especially,
Branch 109 is compaigning
to recruit war vets who have
never joined the Legion.
One may join the Royal
Canadian Legion simply by
completing an application
form (obtainable at the
Branch), showing your
discharge certificate, (if lost
a copy may be obtained from
War Records in Ottawa, and
'paying your fee ($15.00 for
Ordinary and $20 for
Associate). Your application
will be processed by the
branch executive on the last
Tuesday of the month and
passed at the general
meeting of the Branch held
each first Tuesday of the
month at 7:30.
For this small annual fee
you will receive by mail a
monthly Branch bulletin and
the monthly Legion
magazine.
Your wallet size member-
ship card allows you to enter
any Legion Branch in
Canada or United States,
merely by showing your up-
to-date card and signing the
guest book.
The basic reason for the
existence of the Royal Cana-
dian Legion is to actively
remember the war dead,
deceased Legionaires,
disabled and sick members
and other veterans, and all
dependents.
As a member of Branch
109 you can be part of this
worthy cause. Remem-
brance has bound the Legion
together ever since its incep-
tion in 1925. Branch 109 was
chartered in 1927.
Each year the Poppy and
Sick and Welfare committee
can use your assistance.
Many other committees of
the Branch need your time
and talents. Choose your
conrunittee of interest -
membership, sports, house,
. Ways -anal -ear erstcr&aira-
ment, youth - education,
bulletin, public relations,
bingo, canteen, community
services, property, bursary,
scholarships, or the color
party. Each of these com-
mittees can use your
knowledge and skills.
The Legion is the place to
meet yourfriends and make
new friends. Regular
dances, dinners and pub
nights are held at the Branch
for the enjoyment of you,
your wife and your friends.
The .canteen is open from
noon until 1 p.m. each day.,
except Sunday for the enjoy-
ment of you and your guests

nesday, September 23 at 7: 15

at 4 p.m. in the nursery. •
who must be signed in - and
enter and leave when you do.
Often the public image of
the Legion is that of a place
where war veterans swap
war -time tales over a drink.
Most Legion Branches do
provide a place to buy inex-
pensive drinks but one rare-
ly hears a war story. War
service is often difficult to
talk about because many
lack the understanding of the
effects of war service on the
veteran and his family. Most
vets would prefer to forget
the horrors that- they ex-
perienced.
The Royal Canadian
Legion is a Canadian -wide
democratic organization still
very active in its initial role
of remembrance although
community service is now
receiving more emphasis
than in past years. Legion
Branches, like all"organiza-
tions, have both active and
passive members (for a
variety of reasons).
Even though you cannot
presently be an active
member, , Branch . 109 will
'always. appreciate your
name on its nominal roll.
