Centre starts fall events MacKay Centre for Seniors started fall activities Wednesday evening, September 9 with a card par- ty. Euchre, 500 and bridge were played. Winners of the draws were Dave Harman, Beulah Long, Robert Sower - by and Margaret Stirling. A delicious lunch was served ' by the committee in charge. The Board of Directors meets every month. From this board, there is a chair- man with a committee to plan the evening program as well as a co-ordihator for the projects going on in the daytime. The directors are having some changes made to the heating system this week which has resulted in the cancellation of some of the afternoon activities. A donation of $1,000 from the Lions Club was used to put in extra insulation. Therefore, it is hoped the building will be more com- rortable this coming winter. Activities that are starting low include shuffleboard, trt classes with Lu Legg, .-!eramics with Murriel Morgan, bridge classes with Mrs. Dempsey, crewel em- proidery with Kay Hodkin- son. Legion gives gift ' The wedding gift of the Royal Canadian Legion (via Dominion Command . in Ot- tawa) to HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Prin 'cess of_Wales_will_be-a financial contribution to the Terry Fox Youth Centre. The Terry Fox Centre will be a permanent live-in con- ference centre to be located in Ottawa. Its purpose is to give young people across Canada _ a better understanding of Canada and each other. During the school year, groups of • 115 high school students from every part of Canada will live and work there together for a one week period. The centre will cost $1,815,000 and is a project of the Council for Canadian Unity to which the FtOyal Canadian Legion belongs. The federal government has already contributed $807,500. Private and corporate dona- tions have reduced the amount required to $508,000. The Legion hopes to con- tribute 8250,000 by December 31, 1981.. The Legion's plan will ac- tually serve three purposes: (1) mark the marriage of our future sovereign; (2) prll- Mote the essential goal of Canadian unity; -and (31 honor the memory of Terry Fox, the 'yOung man who in- spired the nation with his courageous fight against cancer.
