About
Martha Rathburn
Last year Elliot Rivett and
David White said "Terry
Fox has passed the dream on
to us". Now, it has been
passed on for a very suc-
cessful run this year and we
can only hope, for the sake of
all of us, that the future
years will be just as' great
financially and with even
more runners to carry on the
dream which will eventually
wipe out cancer, .BUT -
EVERYONE must help!
I have to make the trip to .
• the harbour every so often -
quite often some weeks, just.
because I love the water, the
activity around it and the
tranquility which can be
found at a busy place.
I miss .seeing the fishing
nets drying in the sun; they
used to make the old "fish
shanties", look more color- '
ful. T think there was only
one building you could call a
fish shanty and it really
wasn't a "shanty" - not for
many years anyway. But, it
seems, buildings along the
wharf are always called fish
shanties whether they
deserve it or not. •
The buildings do'*n there
now, are very presentable -
butfor the artists - not so col- .
orful.
I remember when they
were building. the Sifto Salt
shaft in 1958, then 'a hit -Of
other buildings appeared.
We Were told the 1900 foot
shaft would be ready by 1959
and 100 'permanent
employees would be there., I
think that did not include the
miners, mechanics and a
dozen other categories that
.work "down below".
.Seventeen hundred to 2,000
tons a day was only the
beginning of the rock salt
broughtto the surface. I
hear it is more like over two
million tons now and three
and a half million when the
new buildings are com-
pleted. Good going, Sifto
(still OUR name for this
great industry at the har-
bour). Oh, they are a mile
out under the lake and 1800
feet down. How about
THAT!
Have you noticed how well
they are progressing with
the town hall? The old post
office is finally getting the
facelift it deserved.
This, to me, is a wonderful
old building. I recall feeling
badly because there was talk
- - back in '58 or '59 about tear-
ing down that building.
Some people can only see
tearing down things as soon
as they get worn or old. We
have so few really good,
well-built buildings in
Canada, that I am thankful
that we now have an
Heritage Act to protect those
that are'still standing.
I don't recall the age of the
post office at that time but
there was talk of shifting the
municipal offices to MacKay
Hall until Jack Marriott and
a few others spoke up for the
Little Theatre group and
other organizations who
were then using MacKay
Hall.
So, they were going to
SELL the old post office and
build a new one. There was
an offer of about $9,000
presented! Property on East
Street was available at less
than $30,000 and a new
evaluation had been made of
$23,000 on the old post office
so, the old building was sav-
ed - and. I'm sure many
others are glad it is finally
being renovated and fussed
up for another hundred or
more years. Oh, in 1958, it
was 78 years old.
A couple of weeks ago I
had a lady ask me how to get
to the Little Lakes and I tried
to tell her. I'm wondering if
ev'ermad it?"
Recently, I` met someone
