(upper right) of Vancouver, Washington recently met cousins here whom she
neverknew she had. They are, Roy Wilson (upper left) of Goderich Township and Vera and
Stan Wilson, residents of Huronview. Mrs. Hale travelled here with her niece, Lyla Ragar of
California who found the cousins through a letter to the editor in the Goderich Signal -Star
while working on a family tree. (Photo by Jim Fitzgerald)

Cathy Gallow was one of about 100 people who turned out
in Goderich in support of the nation's Terry Fox Day
Sunday. She jogged her way around a 10 km route while
others ran, walk and cycled to raise over $2,000 for cancer
research. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)

Septoria blight hit
to -toes hard this summer
gardeners should take
precautions now to stop the
spread of this disease, says
Rick Wukasch of the Pest
Diagnostic and Advisory
Clinic, University of Guelph.
"We've had more inquiries
about septoria blight than
any other vegetable problem
this summer. Two or three
days of wet weather are just
perfect for . starting the
disease and we've had lots of
these periods," he says.
The fungus disease, also
called septoria leaf spot,'
starts on the bottom leaves
of a tomato plant in the force
of small, dark -brown spots -
with sunken, gray centres.
Rain spreads the disease to
foliage further up the plant.
Bottom leaves turn brown
and fall off first. The rest of
the foliage follows leaving
leafless tomato vines. If.
tomatoes do appear, they
stay small and ripen quickly.
When septoria blight first
appears, try to control it by
removing diseased foliage
but prevention is the key,
says Wukasch.
The most effective
The Federation of
Agriculture has presented
themselves to both levels of
government for help in the
agricultural financial crisis
with little reaction. The
emergency task force of
Everett Biggs, John Wise,
Murray Gaunt, Barbara
Shand and Del O'Brien is yet
another attempt by the
federation to respond to the
'crisis in agriculture.
Jim McIntosh, regional
director of the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture,
says the purpose of the task
force is to react to high in-
terest rate and financial pro-
blemsand to determine long .
range goals and planning for
the Ontario Federation of
,Agriculture. ,
He explained, "The task
force. will sit as a panel and
hold hearings. Farmers will
be able to present briefs and
presentations concerning
their problems. The hear-
ings will take place in dif-
ferent locations.
The task force will report
on their findings at the an-
nual convention in
November. "
it
ht hits hard
fungicide is chlorthalonil,
marketed as Foligard, he
says. It holds back the
spread of the disease and is
applied in anticipation of a
long wet period. -
