long time between games
BY DAVE SYKES
Twelve years is a long time between
hockey games -just ask Larry Jeffrey.
Jeffrey was one of almost 100 former
NHL stars who participated in a tour-
nament in Markham August 27-29
featuring players from the former six NHL
teams.
The tournament was organized by
Special Events Television and was
produced for television by CHCH TV in
Hamilton. The concept was an innovative
one, gathering stars of the 1940's, 50's and
60's, to participate in a six team mini -
tournament that brought to life the old
NHL.
The NHL took a different view of the
proceedings and refused to air any
segments of the tournament and teams
were not permitted to wear original team
un iforms.
With the concept in mind, players were
contacted in early July and Jeffrey was
eager to be reunited with Red Wing
cohorts.
"I was asked to play for Detroit and they
just contacted players until the 15 -man
0 otter was filled," he said. "A lot of the
players still play oldtimer hockey' every
weekend but it was 12 years between
games for me."
A twelve year absence, a few additional
pounds and a knee that had been virtually
decimated thmugh several gruelling
seasons didn't dampen his enthusiasm for
the six team reunion. By his own ad-
mission, Jeffrey apporached the tour-
nament casually, expecting more of a
fraternal gathering than a serious
weekend of competition.
A summer swimming program helped
tone muscles and an appendix problem
involuntarily took care of 14 pounds in a
matter of days. The conditioning program
was limited - by choice to avoid any
aggravation to the knee.
Larry was united with ' some old Red
Wing stars that rekindled memories of the
team's appearance in numerous Stanley
Cup finals. The vintage pool included
former stars Norm Ulman, Bruce
MacGregor, Bill Gadsby, Danny Grant,
Dale Rolph, Lowell MacDonald ,Mickey
Redmond,Ted Lindsay and the goalten-
ding tandem of Roy Edwards and Hank
Bassen. •
The remaining five clubs were
' auspicously padded with wily veterans and
recent retirees that included Paul k}en-
derson, Mike Pelyk, Bill Harris and on
Ellis of Toronto; Henri and Rocket
"Richard,Yvan Cournoyour and Phil
Goyette from the Montreal Canadiens and
Jim Pappin, Bill White and -Dennis Hull to
name a few others.
Most notable by their absence from the
Red Wing lineup was Mr. Hockey, Gordie
Howe and former linemate Alex
Delvechio. While both expressed a keen
interest in the tournament, business and
personal interests, prevented their par-
ticipation.
The games were played under oldtimer
rules with no slap shots or body contact.
The rules were softened to accomodate
aging legs but the talent, intensity and
competitiveness was most evident in all
games.
"I didn't know it would be so serious but
a lot of the guys were very competitive,"
Larry said. "I think a lot of people will be
surprised at the calibre of play. Most of
those players can still skate fast and even
though they are old timers, the.tournament
brought out the.competititiveness." •
The conditions were somewhat less than
ideal and conducive to hockey as August
heat rendered much of the ice surface
Ineless and made the going a little tough
for players.
While poor ice conditions were much in
evidence, it didn't detract from the
ferocity or intensity of the former boys off
winter. Despite some injuries, nagging
pains and sore muscles, the players simply
applied the tape to worn bodies and
refused toquit.
By his own admission, Larry did not
have the conditioning required for the pace
of the tournament and rated his own
performance as fair.
"I pulled a groin on the last shift of the
first game and that made it tough for the
rest of the games," he said. "I scored a
-couple goals but next time I will take it
more seriously. Everyone was excited at
the concept and it was good to get together
with the guys."
There is a good chance, judging from the
player and fan reaction, that the tour-
nament will continue in future years.
As for Jeffrey and the Wings, well they
topped the six entries in the preliminary
round with nine points in five games. But
for the results of the playoffs action,
hockey enthusiasts will have to tune in the
18 -one hour shows on Channel 11.
