"It seems impersonal and that's a shame, but it (Seaforth) is not a viable operation in terms of economics and ad- ministration," says Cpl. John Dadds, press liason officer with OPP Toronto. He says the situation will be monitored closely after the switch at the start of next month. "I don'tlike to. see it happen," says Seaforth mayor John Smnamon, "myself, I would like to see the Seaforth detachment stay open." He's tentatively scheduled to join the OPP detachment at Exeter, but didn't know for sure yesterday afternoon because his transfer papers hadn't come through yet. OPP policed the town of Seaforth until 1953 when a local force was established. Since that time provincial police at Seaforth has been responsibile for) areas out- side of the town. There are 200 OPP detachments in the province. Expand force.. • from page 1 "I understand the police viewpoint. If there's 65 people in a park, it's hard to break up," he said. If people use the parks that's their perogative, John Doherty argued adding that if the police could not control crowds, alternate means were available. "You can read the riot act or call in the OPP or even RCMP," he said. If gatherings in parks are a weekly problem, then Stan Profit suggested the town beef up the police force. "I wouldn't want to break up a group but law abiding citizens shouldn't be restricted," he said. "If we can't handle it with the people we have then get more." Councillor Jim Magee reiterated Profit's sen- timents saying "we need reinforcement and are short handed of police in this town." Council will meet .. • from page 1 council will consider other ' such requests in the fpture. Councillor Elsa Haydon commented that it was unfortunate that the letter created "a tempest in a teacup" but added in rebuttal to Doherty's claim that the letter was read on her orders, that nothing was done in a dictatorial fashion. "This is a free country and council is not here to tell people what to do. We should listen to thepeople and deal with them in a businesslike fashion," she said. "Council has created the controversy and are just killing the messenger. The letter was read•at rec board for background." "I knew the letter existed and it is more disturbing if we supress news than to have it read," she said. Jim Searis was disturbed that the letter was read at the rec board meeting and suggested it was read to back a motion made by Haydon. "The letter helped sway members to vote for the motion," he said.. "The letter was addressed to council and not the rec board." The letter of complaint composed by the fastball league was on the recreation, board agenda after director Jane Netzke received authorization from an executive member to do so. Council will now meet with the recreation board to resolve jurisdictional issues and Stan Profit said "to get back to normality we must meet. We must resolve it peacefully, amicably and get on with it."
