Looking Back
Dry spell causes alarm
The continuous dry spell is
causing alarm throughout
the country as the late fruit,
roots, pasture, recently sown
fall wheat, etc are being
seriously affected.
Our old-time friend and
visitor, Dixie Watson, has
presented the managers of
the Marine hospital with a
ton of coal and Mrs. Miner,
nee Trainer, has forwarded
the furniture to furnish a
room at the hospital, both
very kindly acts.
William . Holland has
disposed of his delivery
horse for $170.
At the . meeting of the
Canadian Embalmers'
Association in Toronto last
week, Mr, H.B. Beckett of
Goderich was elected second
vic e -president.
The Goderich 'Organ
Factory is busy these days,
orders coming in by every
mail from the provinces of
the Dominion.
Mr. J.E. Jordan, teacher
of piano and organ and voice
culture, has removed' 'his
studio to Mrs. Williams'
residence, Market Street.
Every new house in town,
as well as many of the older
ones, should, where possible,
be connected with the water
works and sewer systems.
The dust on the main
streets to Goderich has been
unusually severe during the
past month.
Mr. J. W. Smith's horse,
Missouri Chief, won fourth
place in the races at
Syra cuse, New York.
The Dominion Bureau of
Statistics has released a
preliminary report of the
Canadian census, taken in
June, which shows Goderich
having a population of 5,766,
an increase of 832 from the
1951 census figure of 4,934.
Goderich is among a limited
group of municipalities
which showed the largest
jump in town population
figures in Ontario during the
five year period
A.M. Homuth, local
postmaster, says he. has not
received any word yet
regarding the awarding of
contracts to carry the mail
between Goderich and
Stratford ,by motor vehicle.
The post office called for
tenders after the CNR an-
nounced it would discontinue
mail service after Sep-
tember 30. '
After considering six
tenders for the 'addition to
Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital, the Board
of Governors decided that all
bids were too high.
The docket being free of
any criminal cases, the
traditional white gloves were
presented to Hon. Mr.
Justice Barlow Monday at
the beginning of the first
Supreme. Court assizes to be
held in the new Huron
County Court House.
5YEARS AGO
The new Huron Centre'for
Children and Youth became
a reality on Wednesday,
September 1 when the first
board of directors was
elected at a public meeting
held in the Clinton Public
School.
An airport committee
report requesting a decision
of Goderich town council
caused some degree of
concern at, Tuesday
evening's regular meeting,
but 'following tworecorded
votes, council decided 5-3 in
favor of giving Dominion
Roads Machinery Co. Ltd. a
total of 25 years pre -paid
rent at Sky Harbor Airport.
Enrolment in elementary
schools in the Goderich area
is down this year from last as
figures from area schools
seem to indicate that the
community is not getting
larger, just older.
The Goderich Recreation
Board building committee -is
still waiting for a completion
date of new plans for the
Goderich arena roof con-
struction being prepared by
C.C. Parker and Associates
of London.
Constable Tom Jarczak is
moving to Sidney, Australia
at the end of January to
pursue a career in com-
mercial art, ending his five
year career on the Goderich
police department.
