newspaper
Dear Editor,
Enclosed is cheque in the
amount of 815 for renewal of
the Signal -Star.
Am still enjoying the
paper- even though I have
been away from Goderich
some 36 years. Pass it .along
to some friends here who,did
live in the Dungannon area
at one time. Their children
seem to recognize a lot t of
familiar names.
Incidentally onee the mail
strike was over, I received
nine papers iii one day's mail
- so doubt if any isues were
missing. Had a lot of cat-
ching up to do about then ! !
Yours very truly,
Mrs. Don Thomson,
Thessalon
Donations

for project
Dear Editor,
Countless animals are us-
ed mainly in the United
States and in ttrope, in the
process of testing commer-
cial products including
cosmetics. In order'to deter-
. mine whether or not any par-
ticular cosmetic is safe to• be
used, by both. men and
women, the governments, of
the United States and • of
Canada demand that the pro-
duct be tested and proved to
be safe, to their satisfaction.
The most common way of
• carrying out this test is to
subject the eyes of a fabbit
to the particular chemical or
cosmetic to determine if
damage is caused by the
.cosmetic. .
This is commonly -referred
to as the "Draize" test.
Millions of animals suffer
as a result of this procedure.
. Because of obvious and
paramount responsibility of
the, government to protect
the people against harmful
products there is little point
in the humane movement
"protesting" this particular
procedure unless. an alter-
native method of test can be
found.
Dr. Joseph Leighton.of the
Medical' College of Penn-
sylvania Hospital believes
that he can develop a
satisfactory . alternative
testing technique which
would "not involve animals.
All research is expensive.
Dr. Leighton urgently needs
funds in order to enable him.
to continue with his inquiry.
The Animal Welfare Foun=
dation of Canada has
satisfied itself that the pro-
posal by Dr. Leighton is
sound and worthy of support.
. The Foundation is gather-
ing'funds together to enable
the research to commence.
Funds.. are being made
available from humane
organizations in the United
States but we believe that
Canada has a strong moral.
obligation to support this
Wort in the U.S.
Anyone who is interested
in supporting this work may
donate to -the "Animal
Welfare Foundation of
Canada" 8064 Yonge Street.
Toronto, Ontario. L4J 1W3.
"Leighton Fund". Donations
may also be made at the On-
tario Humane Society. 8064
Yonge Street, Toronto. On-
tario, L4J 1W3 and the,
Toronto Humane Society. 11
River Street, Toronto. On:
tario, M5A 4C2. Both of these
societies are supporting this
important humane project.
Donations are tax deducti-
ble. Official, receipts. valid
for tax purposes, will be
issued.
The animals which . are
sacrificed every year to the
Draize test. and sinular
testing procedures. can ' be
saved if a satisfactory alter-
native form of test can be
developed.
Your donation is urgentl}
needed for this unportant
project.
Yours sincerely.
T.I. Hughe' .
