Gord's wins B title,
Courtney a standout

Des Courtney threw a six-
hitter and Bob Reihl and
Dennis Williamson added
two -run singles as Gord's
Sports defeated the Zurich
Sunsets 6-1 to win the GIFL
Labor Day Weekend Fast -
ball Tournament B cham-
pionship and a total of $565.
Gord's opened the scoring
in the first inning when Reihl
singled in Jim Ginn and
Dave Scholl. Zurich scored
one in the second but Gord's
added two more in the third.
1n that inning, Jim and Jon
Ginn both singled and Jim
scored on Scholl's base hit.
Jon then got home on Bill
Gallow's ground out. Gord's
put the game away in the
fifth when Williamson's
single followed Gallow's
single and Reihl's double.
Scholl battered Zurich's
pitchers for three hits while
Jim Ginn was outstanding in
centre field.
The real excitemelt came
in the semi-final when
Gord's rallied for three runs
in the bottom of the eleventh
inning to beat Ingersoll
Terry's Cowboys 8-7. It was
Bill Gallow's two -run two -out
single that won it.
Down 3-2, Gord's tied it
when Dennis Williamson
scored Scholl. The Cowboys
scored two runs in the ninth
and appeared on their way to
the finals but Gord's rallied
when Williamson doubled
and Myles Murdoch singled.
Warren Watt squeezed home
Williamson and Murdoch
alertly went to third on the
play. He then scored on Jim
Ginn's fly ball.
Ingersoll then scored two
in the eleventh making it 7-5.
Gord's rallied once more as
Murdoch singled and Watt
walked. Jim Ginn's single
scored Murdoch and one out
later, Scholl walked to load
up the bases. With two out,
Gallow singled to win the
game. Rob Plunkett took the
'A Goderich Intermediate hits home plate safely as a

Verway leads Fishers to semis
John Verway led Fisher
Builders to two victories 'in
the GIFL tourney before
losing to . Zurich 3-1 in the
semi-finals.
In the opener, Verway
pitched a masterful one -
hitter and late addition Jim
Crawford went three for four
as Fishers blanked Strathroy
5-0.
Fishers opened the scoring
in the first when Crawford
doubled and.scored on Jim
Durst's singly:. They added
another in the third asGerry
Durst walked and scored on
Dennis Lebrun's single:
Crawford gave Fishers
some breathing room when
he hit a two -run homer in the
fourth inning. Crawford, who
was added to Fishers' roster
when John Hoy• was hurt,
added an RBI single in the
sixth. Jim Durst hadtwo hits
for Fishers. Verway lost his
no -hit bid in the fifth as he
faced the minimum 21
batters.
In their second game,
Fishers got two runs in a
controversial play and went
on to defeat Hickson 2-1.
With no score in the first,
Rick Duckworth reached
base on error. Doug Fisher
attempted a sacrifice and he
was safe when his bunt was
bobbled.
They both moved up on a
wild throw and that set the
stage for Dennis I.ebrun's
'heads -up' play. Lebrun
grounded to first and Duck-
worth attempted to score
from third. The throw home
hit Lebrun in the head and
bounced out of play enabling
Fisher to score.
Verway loaded the bases
in the seventh with two out
but got out of it. He allowed
only three hits in the second'
outstanding display.
Fishers were eliminated
by Zurich 3-1 as their attack
stalled, managing only five
hits, two each by Crawford
and Wally Pierson. Verway
again pitched well but his
teammates didn't score the
runs.
Tournament chairman' Doug Fisher presented Gord's
Sports pitcher Des Courtney withran equipment bag and a
watch. foiluing named most valuable player and pitcher
of the B division.
Player of the week
Des Courtney won three
games for Gord's Sports as•
they won. the B cham-
pionship of the GIFL Labor
Day Weekend Tournament.
Honorable mentions go to
Dave' Scholl who had eight
hits, John Verway 'who
pitched three strong games,
Simon Langlois who pitched
three wins . for Lakeport
Steel, 9eorge Sutton whose
home run gave Lakeport the
consolation; title, and Jim
Ginn who played outstanding
defence in centre field.

hitter as Gord's blanked Port
Lambton 7-0., Courtney
allowed only three base
runners (one walk, two
errors) in registering the
win.
Leading the way for
Gord's was Scholl, with a two -
run triple and Bob Reffl who
had two hits.

beat Ingersoll Don Douglas
2-1. Down 1-0, Gord's tied it
in the sixth when Scholl
singled and scored on Reihl's
single. They won it in the
seventh' when Watt singled
and eventually scored on
Scholl's sacrifice fly.
Pitching 26 innings and
allowing only four runs was
Courtney who won the most
valuable player and pitcher
awards.
