The patrol units will be marked and unmarked cars • and motorcycles. Many of the cars will be 'equipped with radar and operate in areas ,which have a high ac- cident rate. During the Labor Day weekend last year, nine per- sons were killed in accidents investigated by the OPP and 836 persons were injured. According . to Commis- sioner Graham, the OPP is committed to reducing the number of people killed and injured through effective en- forcemnentpatrols. . Some of the causes of serious accidents in Ontario are excessive speed, unsafe lane changes and following too, close. Instructions have gone out to the 190 OPP detachments to ensure all members of the Force • operating during this period do their utmost to check these contraventions of the law. . Motorists are reminded that the law in Ontario re- quires them to `'buckle up" their seat belts. It is a proven fact that the use of seat belts reduces deaths and serious injuries. "We will have every radar unit tut in our cars," says Commissioner Graham. "The public should know that they'll be used in un- marked cars as well. as the familiar black and white cruisers." The OPP urge drivers to be patient in the heavy traf- fic expected during this sum- mer's last' long weekend.
