University of Guelph
agricultural graduates are
already in demand by
agribusiness but a new pro-
gram this fall will make
them even more attractive.
"Starting this fall, the On-
tario Agricultural College is
offering a co-operative
education program," says
Mike Jenkinson, of the
Dean's Office.
The program integrates
four terms of work ex-
f
to meet a
perience .in the student's
field of study with the
regular bachelor of science
in agriculture degree pro-
gram. Students alternate
between work and academic
semesters and require four
and two-thirds years to coin
plete the co-operative educas
tion program in addition to
the regular courses.
"The need for this type of
program developed from the
increasing proportion of ur-
usiness deniand
number for the first few
years," says Prof. Jenkin-
son. "For the first year we'll
be able to accommodate
about 40 per cent of the eligi-
ble group or about 30
students."
If statistics from other
Canadian university co-
operative programs are any
indication, two thirds of the
co-op graduates will be hired
by companies they worked
for during one of their work -
semesters. The program is
not only. 'attractive to the
students, but also to
employers.
"Agribusiness spends
money recruiting students in
their graduating year, and
then spends a year in train-
ing," says Prof. Jenkinson. _
"The co-op program would
allow them to get to know the
students earlier."
ban students who are study-
ing agricultural Sciences,
but lack farm experience,"
says Prof. Jenkinson. "The
program offers a chance to
obtain that experience and
increase chances of employ-
ment."
The co-op program isopen
to both urban and rural
students, but they must
achieve ° a 70 per cent_
average in the first two
semesters, hold landed im-
migrant status or Canadian
citizenship, and complete a
successful interview.
Students majoring in
agricultural ` economics,
agricultural businesd
animal and poultry science,
applied microbiology, crop
science and dairy science
are eligible to • apply after
their third semester (one
and a hall years).

gram limited to a small

World Food
Day observed
Agriculture and Food
• Minister Lorne C. Henderson
has announced that Ontario .
will join with the 'United Na-
tions in observing the first "
annual World Food Day on
Friday, October 16.
"It is fitting •that. World
Food Day falls during our
Thanksgiving week,"
Henderson said. "I hope On-
tario residents, and all Cana-
dians, will pause on World
Food Day and, remembering
their Thanksgiving dinners,
and the good fortune that
befalls most Canadians on
that occasion, give some
thought to the one billion
people in the world who are
still confronted with hunger
and malnutrition."
The Canadian, provincial
and municipal governments
as well as private organiza-
tions and individuals will be
participating in the •
worldwide observation. Four
days of special events are
planned at the University of
Guelph.
In announcing the cabinet
decision, Henderson said
that World Food Days pur-
pose is to "help make
everyone more aware of the
world's food needs, especial-
ly the pressing needs of those
in Third World developing
nations".
World Food Day was in-
stituted by the United Na-
tions' Food and Agriculture
Organization as a way of
educating the world about
global food need and pro-
blems, and ta encourage
agricultural production.
As part of the Ontario pro-
gram, the ,Ministry of
Agriculture and Food is
preparing a World Food Day
exhibit for the International
Plowing Match in Barrie.
That exhibit will be
available for showing at
fairs, shows and meetings
throughout the province.
Other programs " and ac-
tivities are also being
prepared. Teachers will be
provided with information
and suggestions for class
and students' -projects about
world food needs and
agricultural production.
Similar activities are be-
ing prepared for Ontario's
colleges of agricultural
technology.
The Ministry of
Agriculture and Food has
also developed two recipes
which it will make available
,to groups and schools as ex
amples of how people in the
Third -World eat.
)11 .
ia hoped that ' marry
organizations in Ontario will
participate in programs and
'educational activities.
