'° Lakeport Steelers won a
couple !of close games last
week ip Industrial League
fastball action , as they
defeated Fisher Builders 3-0
and Canada Company 3-2.
- Against Fishers, Lakeport
was held to just three hits by
John Verway but took ad-
vantage of four errors by
Fishers to win. Frank
McDonald scored the first
Lakeport run in the third
after reaching base on an
error.
They added two runs in the
fifth when McDonald walked
and scored on Bruce
Bowman's double. Bowman
later scored on an error.
Brian MacKenzie made the
score Stand up,. boldin$.
Fishers- to six hits. Wayne
Draper had two hits for
-Lakeport while Wally
Pierson had two for Fishers.
Against Canada Company,
Larry McCabe singled home
David White who had
doubled in the bottom of the
seventh to lead Lakeport to a.
3.2' decision over Canada
Company.
Lakeport opened the
scoring in the first on Bruce
-Bowman's wind -aided home
run. MacKenzie held C.C. at
bay in the first three innings,
fanning seven 'but was
nicked fora run in the fourth
when Brian Bowman singled
and scored two outs lateron
Bob Tigert's single.
Tigert also made a
spectacular catch at the
fence in the fourth to rob
MacKenzie of a certain hit.
Lakeport went ahead in the
fifth as Ron Miller and
McCabe hit back to back
doubles. '
Stan Doherty tied it up in
the seventh when Tom
O'Brien bunted his way on,
stole second for the second
time and scored on Dean
Doherty's clutch two -out
single. Lakeport then won it
on M.cCabe's single.
MacKenzie held C.C. to six
hits, two each by Bowman
and O'Brien while Doherty
suffered his third tough loss
of the week giving up eight
hits, two to McCabe..
FRENCH -6 C.0-5
Canada Company lost
another close one to French
when French exploded for
four first inning runs and
held onr to edge •Canada
Company 6-5. -
French jumped on Dean.
Doherty early as tour scored
before any were , out. Ed
Johnson singled and scored
when Wayne Kennedy
tripled. Long ball artist Bob
Johnson drilled a home run
and Geroge Sutton repeated
the feat.
C.C. closed the gap to 6-3
until they batted in the
seventh. Tom O'Brien
tripled home two runs with
two out but was gunned down
by Sutton when trying to
stretch his hit. O'Brien led
C.C. with two hits while
Kennedy and Sutton added
two each for French. •
FRENCH -14 BEDFORD -13
In another game, French
Drycleaners exploded for an
unbelievable 14 runs in the
third inning, and even more
unbelievably, barely hung on
to beat Bedford 14-13.
There were 31 hits off
seven different pitchers.
Errors prove costly
Darryl Beattie unloaded a
three -tun homer in the top of
the seventh to lead Green &
Parent Thunderbirds to a
come from behind 4-2 win
over Canada Company.
- G&P opened the scoring in
the fourth when Brian
Rumig and Jim Martin
singled. John Warr knocked
in Martin. C.C. replied with
two runs in their fourth when
Rob Standen singled and Joe
Moore walked. Both scored
when Bob Tigert's bunt was
thrownlnto right field, •
Errors proved costly for
C.C. in the seventh when
Brian McLean and Denis
Miskie both reached base .on
them. Beattie followi Liw th
his. clout .and G&P led 4-2.
Martin.. finished off C.C. in
the seventh to take the win:
DeanDoherty pitched well
enough to win but fell victim
to Beattie's hit. Martin had
two hits for G&P while Mike
Donnelly and Brian Shewfelt
added two apiece for C.C.
Gord's Sports used three
first inning runs to lead them
to a 5-1 win over. Lakeport
Advertising last Wednesday.
Jon Ginn and Warren Watt
had back to back singles and
,were brought in by Bob
Reihl's triple. Reihl scored
on Dave Scholl's . single.
Gord's added single runs in
the second and third innings -
to lead 5-0.
' Lakeport finally reached
Scholl for a run in the sixth
on Bill Gallow's sacrifice fly.
Scholl .gave up seven hits,
two to Greg Hansen in
winning. his first start since
his hand injury. Myles
Murdock and Watt each had
two hits off loser Arnie
Parker who gave up nine
hits.
Wayne Doak hit a two run .
homer in the sixth inning and
Simon Langlois fired an
eight strike -out five hitter to
lead Lakeport Advertising to
a 3-1 win over Fisher
Builders Sunday.
Lakeport scored first in
the third inning on singled by'
Bill Gallow .and Langlois.
Fishers tied it in the sixth
when Jack MacKinnon
reached base on an error and.
scored on Gerry Durst's
double. That set the stage for
Doak's home run. •
•Loser John Verway gave '
up only five hits and struck
out ten in a fine per-
formance.
Green & Parent used a
four run third inning out-
burst to lead them to a 4-3
win over Hotel Bedford
—.Sunday.
The Dukes opened the
scoring in the second inning
when Brian Sowerby singled
and scored later with one out
on Terry Austin's hit. Austin
also had a sixth inning home
run and finished • with three
hits.
.But the difference was the
third inning when G&P
scored four times. on four
hits. Bob Graham and Leroy
Meriam singled. Brian
.McLean followed with a walk
and John Warr cleared the
bases witha double.
Darrell Beattie then
singled home Warr. Loser
Rnn Austin allowed just one
other hit in recording the
loss.

Bedford led 5-0 after two but
let it slip away as French
sent 17 men to the plate in the
third. Bedford came to
within one but left the tying
run on second base.
Bill Black, Rob Plunkett,
and Brian Sowerby had three
hits for Bedford. Plunkett
had a two -run homer, in the
fifth. Ron/ Bogie had three
hits for French while Ray
Mathers, George Sutton, and
Wayne Kennemy added two
each for French. Phil Turner
had a three -run homer as did
Bob Johnson. Kevin Jewell
proved to be the only pitcher
capable of winning the
game..

McGees win again
On Monday night, the
McGee Pontiacs easily
defeated Fisher Builders 9-0
for their seventh consecutive
victory.
In the first inning, Ron
Klages singled, Ron Sowerby
walked, and Doug Spitzig's
single brought, both. home.
They added to this lead with
one run in the second, two in
the third and four in the
sixth.
Ron Sowerby had a solo
home run in the second. Big
hitters .of theJght were
Mike 'Frayne, P Bartliff,'
and Paul Kelly all with two
hits apiece.
The winning pitcher was
Ken Daer while Doug Fisher
was on the mound for the
losing cause.
In the second game of the
night, Gord's Sports handed
this year's league leader
Lakeport Steel their third
loss, 11-0, in fiveinnings.
Five runs were scored in
the first .inning as nine
batters came to the plate,
knocking starting pitcher
Wayne Draper out to be
replaced by Brian
MacKenzie. Gord's scored
three more in the second,
two in the third and one in
the fourth to close out the
scoring.
Leading the Gord's Sports
batters was Bob Riehl who
went four for four. Phil
Petrie and winning pitpher
Des Courtney eachhad three
hits in carrying Gord's to
their fifth consecutive vic-
tory.
Player
of the week
Darryl Beattie had two
game winning hits and beat
Hotel Bedford 4-3 in a rare
pitching appearance.
Honorable mention goes to
Bob Johnson ,who nailed two
home runs, Brian
MacKenzie who had two
impressive wins, and Tom
O'Brien who had two two -hit
games and stole twobases.
