The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-07-29, Page 6PAQE 6--GQDERLGN SIGNAI,STAR, WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 1981 s This brave lion tamer prepares to put her bead into a fierce lion's mouth during one of the acts by Clowning Around, a mime group from Owen Sound which performed for children in Harbour Park last Wednesday. (Photo by Cath Wooden) Police will do their part Dear Editor: In last week's Signal -Star Mr. White of Elgin Avenue lauded the work being under- taken by Goderich Elevators to eliminate some of the truck traffic through parts of town. I also congratulate Mr. Parsons for this decision. Mr.; White added that he hoped the police would do their part regarding the traf- fic and noise. I would , like to let Mr. White know that in 1980 the Goderich Police did enforce the traffic laws against 1,021 mobile offenders. Radar checks on Elgin Avenue at various periods also showed that very few of the trucks • were exceeding the speed limit, no matter how it might appear to the human eye or ear. ' me ' noise from the trucks usual* came when their type of transmission shifted gears three or more times in a relatively short distance. This noise, though disturbing to the residents, was not "unnecessary noise" but the sound of. a truck driving normally on the street. Police can only take action (either under the Highway Traffic Act or the Town Noise By -Law) for any un- necessary noise. Mr. White can be assured that traffic enforcement is still being carried out by the local police (thus far this year 593 offenders have been dealt with). Unnecessary noise offenders will continue to be dealt with whenever police can prove the offence. Unfortunately, most citizens who see or hear the offender and can recognize the car and driver, are reluctant to want to go to court as a — witness - the police are then forced only •to warn the violators. Until " such times as engineers design quieter operating trucks, the sound of them will still remain a noise to those living near any truck route. Hopefully, Goderich Elevators planned route will lessen the pro- blems to a great extent. The Goderich Police will con- tinue to do their part to the limit of their power under laws Yours truly, Patrick D.
