Round 'n
About
` list recently Archbishop
(retired) James Watten of
Moosenee, now, of Southamp-
ton, dedicated the Hawkins
window in Port Albert Christ
Church. The window, in the
Memory of John Hawkins
and his wife, was given by
their descendants on 'the
150th Anniversarypf their ar-
rival in Canada from County
Down, Ireland.
. My interest in the Hawkins
family goes back to the
history of the Point. Farm
property, now a Provincial
Park,, five miles north of
Goderich. The original Point
Farm Hotel was built by a
man named Davis. His wife
was a daughter of John
Hawkins,a pioneer of Port
Albert. ., ,;
Point Farm, was the first
summer resort established
in Western Ontario - a holi-
day centre for many, many
people from alt parts of
Canada and the " United
States. Among its many
distinguished guests in
bygone years was General
Sherman of U.S. Civil War
One way of bringing sup-
plies to the hotel was by
rowboat, from Goderich - a .
fair distance, and one night,
during a storm, Davis was
drowned. Later, his widow
married. J.J. Wright, a
dignified aristocratic little
Englishman. '
When the Point Farm hotel
burned down, J.J. Wright
built a new hotel" much big-
ger and very grand with
rooms for 200 guests and a
dining room which would ac-
comodate 300 diners at one
sitting. The many windowed
building had a high tower in
the front centre and from the
top of this, a good view of the
country could be seen - and
when visibility was good, it
was claimed you could see
Michigan across the lake.
Point Farm had a bus ser-
vice
and also a small steam
yacht'operating between the
hotel and Goderich.
Telegraph service and a lot
of other conveniences were
all for the accommodation of
the guests. Picknickers
came from miles around to
enjoy an outing at this
resort. They could accom-
modate as many as 2,000
people on the grounds at one
time.
This choice piece of 'pro-
perty, about 375' acres of
Lake Huron Shoreline, was
once owned by J.T.
Goldthorpe, later by 0.E.
Fleming and then purchased
by Bissett Brothers in 1937.
The grand old hotel seem-
ed to fade away after its
Many years of grandeur and
when I first saw the old loca-
tion, there was nothing there
to tell of its past history.
Now thousands are again
• enjoying the fine stretch of
beach and the conveniences
now supplied by the Parks of
Canada people.
There now - I've wandered
off the path and got lost
again - but 'as rve said
before, you meet the nicest
people that way.
•Recently I took Walt for a
ride - no; I did not lose him. -
he knows the reads too well ,-
