There was plenty of good tennis action at the Maitland
Country Club's Dominion Day Classic Saturday. In the
above photos, Ronan Conlon returns a serve in a first
round match while Bill Shewfelt offers a forehand smash
in a match against Pat Conlon. Both players lost in their
bid to reach the finals where Jim Costello outlasted Bob
Dick to 'win the championship. Jeff Baechler won the

Third,Fun Run this weekend
Running enthusiasts of all
Calibres will be pounding the
streets of , Goderich this
Saturday as they compete
for prizes in the third annual
Goderich 10 Kilometer
Classic Road Race and Fun
Run.
About 150 runners, divided
into four classes, are ex-
pected
xpected to compete in the
event which starts in front of
the Town Hall at 10 a.m.
There are four classes this
year: Men's Open, Women's
Open, Masters (40 years and
over), and Goderich
Residents Open.
All finishers will receive a
T-shirt,, and first, second,
and third place finishers in
each class win a beer stein.
Goderich rec director Jane
Netzke is hoping'competitors
will pre -register at the office
at the grandstand to avoid
confusion on the day of the
race.
Netzke is also requesting
the people who live along the
race route to keep runners
cool with a fine spray from
their garden hoses.
The winner of the Goderich
Men's Open last year was
Robert Cox. Tony Lourenco
was second, and Bill Kovacs
was third. There was only
one entry' in the Goderich
Women's Open last year, and
that was eight-year-old
Trudy Wade who ran the
race with he r dad.
Ball team returns victorious
On . Friday, Goderich
travelled . to Ayton and
returned ' victorious. They
had a strong start and with
two out in the first inning,
Mark Frayne and Bob
Hnatyk flit home runs back
to back. Dave Patterson hit a
home run in the second in,
ning to make it'3-0.
Mark Frayne knocked in
Gary Peters in the third
inning and another home run
was hit in the sixth inning by
Bob Milia r. Ayton got on the
score board in the bottom of
the sixth with one run. Steve
Haggitt and Mark Frayne
got runs in the seventh and
eighth on errors. In the
bottom of the ninth Ayton got
one more run to make the
final score 7 - 2.
Fred Pellow was the
winning pitcher and had nine
strike outs in the game.
Goderich plays Ayton again
an Tuesday night here in
Goderich. They travel to
Belmore on Wednesday
evening for a 91o'clodc game.
Tractor pull this weekend
This weekend the village of
Lucknow will host the fourth
rendition of the Lucknow
Can Arn Class A Tractor
Pull.
The event will be held
Saturday and Sunday at the
Lucknowtractorpull park
just north of the village and
action will get underway
Saturday at 12.30 p.m.
The sanctioned tractor pull
will feature over 100vehicles
in three divisions; heavy
trucks, big tractors and the
mini -tractor series.
Admission is $5 Saturday, $6
Sunday and $2 for children.
Molsons sponsors the mini -
event which is the third in an
18 -event series. Trophies are
presented at year end

Tennis Club holds
annual .tournament
0.This past weeken(1 the
Maitland Tennis Club held
its annual Dominion Day
Classic Tennis Tournament.
Some of the best matches
ever played at the club took
place during this two day
event.
Jim Costello emerged as
the men's singles champion
beating Jeff Baechler and
Patrick Conlon in the
quarter finals and John
Brown in an excellent three
setsemi-final,
The other men's 'finalist
was Bob Dick who beat Den-
nis Dowhaniuk and. Tom
Ewer in the quarter finals
and Rolan Conlon in another
superb three set semi-final.
- Costello was a worthy win-
ner. He played outstanding
tennis throughout the whole
tournament and won a well
played final 6.3, 6-2.
On the consolation side of
the men's draw,. Jeff
Baeehler came out on, top,
defeating Dennispowhaniuk
in a three set marathon.
On the ladies' side of the
draw, seen -finalists Were
Helen Conlon and Margaret
Conlon, Barbara Conlon°, and
Claudia Hill. Both semi-final
matches contained some fine .
tennis. Barbara Conlon, the
young rival, faced sister
Margaret in an exciting
final. Barbara won in three
sets and the match was said
to be the finest ladies' cham-
pionship ever witnessed at
the club:
The Dominion Day classic
was a smoothly run, highly
competitive tournament and
congratulations should be
given to all participants:
Men challenge links
The threatening skies of
Monday, June 29, didn't pre-
vent about 35 men from
challenging the links of the
mighty Maitland. The links,
however, went down to
defeat to Mike Paquette who
scored a three under par to
win a 271/2 net. Placing se-
cond was Mike's two ball
partner Randy Hugill who
stroked a 37 and a 291 net.
Other winners included John
Stringer, Russ Gemnlill,
Earl Elliott and Ken Hunter.
Remember guys to get
those matches started. Don't
forget to mark August 8 on
your calendar for Men's In-
vitational.
Golf lessons are available;
everyone welcome - juniors,
women and men on
Tuesdays at 9 'a.m. during
July and August. Private
lessons are also available.
On Tuesday night, June 30,
regular play for women; only
17 were present due to inter-
club match with Maitland,
Sunset and Kincardine clubs
being played the same day at
1.p.m.
Winners for the evening
were: first flight - Doris Pa-
quette, Marie Huff, Ardith
Brissette - putts; second
flight - Verne Frith, Joan
McDougall, Kay Duncan -
putts; and third -flight-J.-
Joyce Shack, Pat Tyndall,
Pauline McKellar - putts.
There was a full turnout of
24 entries for the inter -club
match, which was played
under overcast skies, occa-
sional spitting rain and fog.

be held in Kincardine on
Tuesday, August 18, so
here's hoping Maitland can
cut down on Kincardine's big
lead. • •

Giants take lead
Giants took a slim one
point lead atop the' Squirt
Soccer House League stan-
dings last week as a result of
a 2-2 draw with Vikings.
Centre -forward Mark Arm-
strongcontinued his fine
play of recent weeks by scor-
ing twice for Giants, while
Mike Stiles and Tim Spitzig
replied for Vikings, who
came back strongly in the se-
cond half.

Bombers scored an upset 1-0
win over Raiders. In the first
half Jason Dempsey scored
-for Bombers following a
splendid breakaway run
from mid -field. Raiders
were held off the score sheet
by some fine goalkeeping by
