The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-07-01, Page 7Doririe167 scores to
Iead Uniteds to win
Dennis Donnelly scored on
a penalty kick 15 minutes
before the end of the game to
give the Goderich Uniteds a
Z-1 victory over. San Bar-
tolomeo on Sunday here.
The penalty kick came
about as a result of.a long
ball to Lee Arbour who split
two Bartolomeo defenders
but was tripped up inside the
187ylerd box as he was about
to have a try on net. Donnelly
then did his job as he put the
ball high and hard into the
right hand side of the net,
while the Bartolomeo goalie
was diving the other way. '
San Bartolomeo opened
the scoring midway through
the first half, also on a
penalty kick. A San Bar-
tolomeo player had beaten a
United fullback and had
almost a sure goal when he
was trippedfrom behind by
Bill Walters.
United came back onto the
field fired -up at the start of
the second 45 minutes as
they knew a win was im-
perative for their "season's
record. They controlled the
play . and pressed the op-
position consistently for the
first 15 minutes of the half.
They were finally
rewarded with a corner kick
which Jed deJong, who had
moved up from his fullback
position for this game,
curved into the net just in-
side the post to beat the
opposition keeper.
The goal seemed to lift
United's spirits and they
took control for the
remainder of the, game.
Donnelly scored the winner
on his penalty kick and
United had a 2-1 victory. .
Greg Smith nlaved., out-
standing in thenet fpr United
despite being a little under
the weather. Rolf Gottschalk'
also had a fine game and
seemingly had the ballon his
foot all day. Mike Hodge
played a strong game and
fought determinedly for
every ball.
The United 'B's had a.good
match,. on Saturday also as
they pummeled Cinton 9-1.
Eric Mitchell scored four
goals, Bruce . Melick had
three and Dennis Dowhanuik
and Randy Stoddart had one
each to_ account for the
scoring.
United A is now 4-2-2 and
tied with four other teams
for third place. United A has
one week off and then travel
to, London to play Calabra,
which is currenity tied for
first place.

15 inning marathon.'tla

on the scoreboard. Norma
Walter singled and was

choice.
