The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-06-24, Page 11Slaw -pitch league at midway point of season The Goderich Men's Slowpitch League has just passed the halfway point of its 1961 game schedule. Of the 18 -team, three divi- sion league, only the top four teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs. Each division will playoff for its own champion. The B and C, champions will then playoff to determine Willi will meet the A champs for the overall league champion- ship. T� date, we have played 45 games within the division and 54 inter -divisional games. Of those 54 there have been only three so- called upsets. The half of the season promises to be even more interesting as the race for playoff spots continues. Many of these positions will not be deter- mined until the final round of the schedule when each team plays within its own division. During the past week 15 games were played- Op- timists defeated Renegades 17-4, Port Albeit shut out Champco 190, 1863 lost to Meneset 16.1, Oldtimers over Renegades 12-6, Port Albert dumped Cobras 12,3 and 1863 r by a score of 22-7, Signal Star whipped- iampco _ in five, Smiths won a close ohne over Selinger Wood 24-23, Fireman dumped Bluewater 214.6, Coyotes edged, Wheelsmen 104 and Op- timists clipped Tickers 17-12. Here on Sunday they edged Norwich 2-1, and Friday night at home got by the Kitchener -Waterloo Civitans 4-3. In Moorefield on Thursday, the Little Plumbers outscored the Hilltops 8- . The Little Plumbers won the game against Norwich in the first inning when they scored both of their runs. Jenny More started off the batting order with a single, and made it to second after an error. Heidi Elliott t en got on base through Norma Walter batted in the two runs with a triple. I4orwich's only run came in the ninth inning from Donna Hendrick. Darlene Bostock pitched the winner for the little Plumbers, allowing only four hits and striking out six batters at the plate. On Frlday'night, however, the winning run for the little Plumbers didn't come until the bottom of the ninth in- ning. It was 3-3 ' from the sixth inning on until Heidi Elliott scored on Diane Melick's hit for the win over Kitchener. The Civitans opened the scoring in the third inning on a run by Julie Ranton, only to have Goderich tie it up in the fourth. Diane Melick singled then advanced on a wild pitch. She got to third on Donna Horner's out and made it home on a fielder's choice by Sue Kolkman. In the fifth, the Little Plumbers went up 3-1. Heidi Elliott and Norma Walter were on base when Diane Melick got on base through an error, allowing Elliott to score. Then, on a wild pitch to Sue Kolkman, Norma Walter was enabled to score, The Civitans tied up the score in the sixth inning on runs by Cynthia Vail- and Julie Ranton, but the Little Plumbers . came through with the winning run. Heidi Elliott was on the mound for Goderich, striking out three batters and allowing nine hits. The night before in Moorefield, it was a high - scoring affair as a total of 14 runs were tallied with Goderich coming out on top of the8-6 score. The Little Plumbers went ahead 6-0 in the first three innings of play. In the first inning, Jenny More, Heidi Elliott, and Norman Walter loaded up the bases. Sandy Rowe followed with a single to bring in More, Mary Kolk- man singled to score Elliott, and Diane Melick got a base hit to bring home Walter for the 3-0 lead In the third inning, Heidi Elliott and Norma Walter were on base when Sandy E Rowe doubled to bring in Elliott. Diane. Melick's hit brought home Walter and Rowe after a Moorefield fielding error. In the sixth and seventh inning, Moorefield managed to tie up the game with a series of base hits in the sixth for four runs, and two in the seventh. However, the Little Plumbers came together in. the eighth and ninth to score the winning runs. Sue Kolk- man olkman scored the winner in the eighth, while Sandy Rowe rounded out a perfect .night at the plate by getting a single in the last inning. Diane Melick doubled to bring her in. Bev Wright . pitched the winner for Goderich. She struck out two batters and allowed 14 hits. . The Hoffmeyer's Little Plumbers play their next home game at Ag Park this Friday night against Milverton.
