(Photo by Cath Wooden) The first annual Goderich Invitational Women's Fastball Tournament came off as a success last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with 24 teams competing for cash and trophies. Eight teams from Goderich, Mitchell, St. Marys, Dublin, Wingham, Port Elgin, and Bay City participated in the A division with St. Marys emerging the champions over the little Plumbers from Goderich. Bay City took the consolation prize over Wingham. In the B division, 16 teams from Goderich, Clinton, Kincardine, Palnlmerston, Listowel, Kitchener - Waterloo, Exeter, Ben - miller, and Kintail com- peted. It was the Clinton Housewives that beat out.. The Little Plumber defence tired ofthe waiting game as two errors allowed Avery to score. Both pitchers were the stanrloilts In the -game _ they stayed the distance, making it nearly impossible for batters ..to get on base. Darlene Bostock was on the mound for the Little Plumbers and allowed only four hits over the 16 inninga. She won the Most :Vau'uaab' Player award for her efforts. St_ Marys pitcher was Deb Bell who won the Best Pit- cher itcher award: She pitched the shut out gam, allowing 11 Little Plumber hits. BAYCITY-4 WINGHAM-2 The team from Bay City, Michigan walked away with the A consolation prize Sunday afternoon with their win over; tiringitan, They scored all four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after being behind 1-0 on Lyn Fisher's run for Wingham in the second in- ning Gena Reszke, Kathy Lieber, Janie McDonald, and Sheltie Schlicker all scored for Bay City. Tournament chairman Diane Mitchelmore says that financially the tournament did -well, at least lbreaking even and perhaps making some money for next year's tournament. - Also on the organizing committee were Bill Kirkey who was treasurer, Del and Don Mitchelmore who were in charge of scorekeeping, Del .Mitchelmore Jr. who handled ground crews, Denise Mitdiehnore took charge of T-shirts sales, and Deb Mitchxlmore sold draw tickets and handled the scoreboard. Doug Cruichshank, Dave MacDonald, and John Hoy also provided valuable services for the first annual tournament. FARMI.RS.
