GODERICHSIGNALSIAR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, I901—PAGE 5 No 'need for another. holiday.reader says Dear E- der, I am writing to object to town Col1PLWA'SSunPilit dthle city of Kingston's resolution to make a holiday in the month of Feltruary in honour of Sir John L Macdonald. It is clear that only coun- cillor Jim Snarls with a nay vote gave any consideration to the costs and benefits ac- cruing from such a holiday being decreed. For this I say three hurrahs for Jim. It is also dear., that no thought was given by the yea votes, especially councillor Haydon and Reeve Wheeler when their only objection was the publicity which the city of Kingston would gain from such a holiday pro- claimed. If Sir John A. Macdonald needs to be honoured, why not proclaim the day after Dominion Day, Sir John A. day and give everybody a four-day weekend. At least with :this new holiday being the day after Dominion Day people might remember why we are celebrating the holi- day. In the middle of February on a cold dreary winter day who will even. remember why we are celebrating this holiday. Or, if the real pur- pose igpose of the resolution is to have a holiday in February because we don't have a statutory holiday in February then I say declare the third Monday in February a holiday but don't use &r John A. to at sell the idea to the people of Goderich or the people of Canada. Now let us consider the economic side of the argu- ment. At thepresent time I believe . there " -are nine. statutory holidays and with Sir John A's an even ten, or. to put it another way, two full working weeks every year. I will ask the question to councillor Haydon and Reeve Wheeler. "When is enough, enough?" ten holidays?, twenty holidays?. If'this holidayis to be a civic holiday the council, in endorsing the resolution, is not acting in the best in- terests of the citizens of Goderich. They are acting in the best interests of the civil servants. If the lost work cannot be made up then overtime will need to be paid. The one day holiday cost is now transformed into aday and a half holiday cost to the tax- payer if tune and- a half is paid for overtime. If the work can be made up with no overtime it indicates that there are too many peo- Decision pie employed for the worm which is available for these civil sent/ants. The real tact would be to have the holiday as a civic holiday without pay. Then see how popular the holiday is. Now let us suppose the civic holiday is transformed into a statutory holiday. Every employee, public or private, is :lwwlegally enttF ed to another day off. . . Before, with the civic holi- day idea, the costs were high enough but because civil ser- vants do not produce physical goods the country of mare popie after Sewer might be able to afford the goads- baliday, ut1,daabt it . Now we have reduced form of higher prices for the our real productivity and in- products produced, which creased our inflation, one turns full circle back to the definition being the pursuit consumer. As you can see, was wrong Haydon claims Dear Editor, Even at this late date I want ,.to mention how much my husband and I enjoyed The Sound of Goderich .con- ce>et on May 24. The reaction of the Large audience and the comments I have heard sinceindicate' that our im- pressions m - p . i were shared by many. .The four performing groups were The Craigeilen Singers, The Goderich Har-' bouraires, Goderich Teen Tones, and Laketown Band. Each group individually, as well as in The Hallelujah Clxhraas by Handel sang and played by the entire cast, gave ' iS "a most enjoyable and uplifting Sunday after- noon, making us aware once more of the many good things we have going for us in our town. I want to take this oppor- tunity to get something off my mind, something in which I was wrong. A couple of years ago the Laketown Band approached the Recreation board and the Town Conned asking - for financial support. At that time the Board had just for- mulated a policy of finan- cially supporting only new groups who found themselves in temporary difr ficulties. I"was among those who spoke and votedagainst giving continued finnr4"1z l sapport to the Laketown Band who then had to turn elsewhere. I have since comae to realize , that I was wrong. Although there is nothing out of order with the above men- tioned policy, its strictly blanket application to every situation would not be beneficial to the aims, of ow The Laketown Band's contribution goes far beyond a group of people "doing their Own thing". Aithni h I have singled - out the Laketown Band because of the past incident, the same applies to the other groups who participated in the concert: These people are continuously giving much) of themselves' in dine - consuming ear in many ways, costly search for real or imaginary "bad improvement and per-. things" in, store for us. To prove my point only two of the tura stories of the front page of the June 3 Sill -Star, the Boy Scouts picture and the motorcycle accident, did not` urrolve some government body or civil employee. To conclude, I believe that the holiday is a poor idea. Remove government control of our lives and the Canadian people, through hard work, will solve our problems such as energy, inflation and unemployment.
