In Holland, the windows and streets are washed
once o.week.
Nothing comes easy
The well known saying., attributed to a Frenchman, that
God created the world but the Dutch made Holland, perhaps
suggests that the Supreme Being would have had the sense to
• leave this spongy porridge swamp, this homeland of galoshes
las the poet P.H. de Genestet called it) severely alone. But
. the Dutch settled and persevered. Until thiys generation they
knew as indiv1,-li,;als what it meant to dig with a spade, what
the power of water was, and how difficult and dirty any sort .I
of reclamation work could be. Nothing in Holland has come
without cast. -Anthony Bailey, The Light In Holland.
