In Holland, the windows and streets are washed
once a week
Nothing comes easy
The well known saying, attributed to a Frenchman, that
God created the world but the Dutch made Holland, perhaps
suggests that the Supreme Being would have had the sense to
leave this spongy porridge swamp, this homeland of galoshes
fas the poet P,H. de Genestet called it severely alone. But
the Dutch settler] and persevered. Until this generation they
knew as indivi luals what it meant to dig with a spade, what
the power of water was, and how difficult and dirty any sort
of reclamation work could he. Nothing in Holland has come
without cost. -Anthony Bailey, The fight In Holland.
