"We are completing displays that were
partially done last year in the medical room,
courtroom and apartment," he said. "We
are also working on the kitchen which will
take about two years. Soon the jail will be
restored to its original condition."
The restoration and cleanup operations
began April 4 and by mid-June the staff will
_be irn reased to seven to ha die visitors and
daily maintenance.
Beginning this weekend, the jail will be
open daily from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. in-
• eluding weekends and a number .of school
tniirc are PTrbeefed. Guided tours. for
groups of 25 or more can be arranged with
'
Bosnell but for the most part, visitors are
left to browse on their own. But after the
Labor Day weekend, the jail will only open
on weekends . until "the operation starts
losing money."
Much of the stone and masonry Work of
the old buildingand courtyards will be the
target of fervent restoration this spring
under the federally -funded Katimavik
program. Much of the mortar has
deteriorated and a ;tabu, vik work teem
will spend three months, beginning in
March, working on walls and foundations.
The staff has been working on roofing the
past two years and received some money
- from the county to complete a section of
shingling. The remainder of the roofing
work will be completed in the next few
years.
The jail is basically a self-sufficient
operation and students are hired under
Experience 81 and Youth Employment
programs. A small maintenance grant is
supplied by the Ministry of Culture and
Recreation.
"We are the only operation of this type on
a tight budget," Bosnell said. "And we
would like to make it pay."
Last year the jail attracted 16;500 visitors,
a drop in attendance of 1,000, but Bosnell
says the figures reflect the economic
climate.
"The figures are in line with the economy
but our problem is how to, get people back.
Some people have toured four times but
mostly people just come once," he said.
"The house seems to be a bigger attraction
than the jail and people enjoy the artifacts
and sense of historical perspective. "
Aside from the jail and governor's house,
the weekly flea market gas added sub-
stanfigtraffic andrn:accoriingtoBosnell, a
social success. The,flea market will begin
this Sunday, May 17 and continue each week
ilia vie/Aber permits.
This year admissions are $1.50 for adults;
$1 for stridents from 13 to 18 and 50 cents for
children. Groups of 25 or more recieve a
discount and evening tours can be arranged
during daylight hours by . calling Harry
Rosnell.
Perhaps ft was first time luck, or natural skill, but Clarence Perdue, kneeling, and John
Semple quickly caught onto the knack of carpet bowling. Demonstrated by Mr. and Mrs.
Frith, representatives from several senior citizens clubs. in the area met at the Goderich
Township Hall to learn the garde. The demonstration was sponsored by the Go a k±
Township Enterprising Seniors. (Shelley McPhee photo)
