Value of stolen goods down
Police Chief Pat King noted in his
activity report to the police commission
last week that while occurrences and
criminal activities investigated by police
were up during this year's first quarter
as: compared to last year's, the dollar
value of property stolen and damaged
was down considerably.
He said that liquor seizues had more
_: than ._doubled -this -.quarter-and -noted -that
this seemed to be a trend allover the
county.
The number of traffic accidents in
Goderieh has remained consistent over
the last five or six years with ap-
proximately 59 people being injured each
year, he told the commission. He said
people seemed to be practising better
driving habits lately.
He also noted that police overtime was
down considerably in the firstquarter
over last year and said that this was
largely „due to the new provincial of-
fences act:
Assault kit
A letter from the Ontario Police
Commission regarding the supply and
use of the Ontario Sexual Assault
Evidence Kit was received and filed by
thecommission.
Accounts paid
Accounts totalling $27,040.38 for the
month of March were approved for
payment by the police commission.
POLICE BEAT
Conference
Several members of the commission
will attend -a conference in Toronto in
October on `Police -Community
Relations: The Community's Respon-
sibility'.
Some will also acceIt an invitation
from Exeter to attend the official opening
of the new police building there on May
13.
Tam van
Chief King informed the commission
that Maurice Gardiner had expressed
interest in registering a van to be used as
a taxi, not for in town., but for taking boat
crews to the city for several days.
Recently clew members from boats
harbored at Goderich had asked to be
driven to Toronto for a few days' holidays
and then returned to Goderich.
The commission stated that they had
no control over out-of-town business but
that if the van was to be used in town, it
would have to be registered. However,
they said they would not act on the
request until it is presented to them
formally.

PUC commissioners get X30 per diem rate
Town council agreed with a recom-
mendation from the finance committee
that will give PUC commission members
a per diem rate of $30 while attending out
o2 town conferences. Li addition to their
annual salary, PUC members were
receiving a daily allowance of ;27 for
commission bsuiness outside Goderich.
Councillor Elsa Haydon opposed the
motion claiming commission members
were entitled to salary and expenses the
sane as council members.
Council granted the Goderich Trotting
Association permission to run an open air
beer garden on race nights at Agriculture
Park. The race nights scheduled for 1981
include July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 and August
6, 13, 20 and 27.

Board endorses U of T decision
The Huron County Board
of Education has endorsed a
unilateral decision by the
University of Toronto to
exclude a number of ap-
proved secondary school
courses for admission to the
post -secondary institution.
The Board of Education
for the Borough of East York
is asking for support of a
resolution asking the
Minister of Education and
Colleges and Universities to
conduct an investigation into
the action by the University
of Toronto.
Director of Education,
John Cochrane explained
that U of T is no longer
recognizing certain Grade 13
subjects for adriiiss ion
requirements. So cour§es
like theatre arts and .com-
pnter sciences, which are
offered under Ministry of
Education guidelines, will
not be accepted by the
May of Arts nnttSiiences
in Toronto.
The borough of gag York
argued that, subsequent to
the decision of University of
Toronto, the potential for
other universities to begin
arbitrarily excluding ap-
proved courses is very real.
Many secondary school
programs have been
modified to meet specific
needs in the work force and
led to the development of
new curriculum in
technology, statistics and
marketing and business
studies.
Perhaps the main issue, as
outlined in the resolution, is
the fact that the University
of Toronto is a publicly -
funded institution and is
reletting guidelines set out
by the Ministry and
secondary schools. The
university is claiming that
several courses taught in
secondary school have no
relevance to university
studies.
Trustee `Dorothy Wallace
of Goderich introduced a
motion not to support the
resolution claiming the
university had a right to
establish standards.
"The University of
Toronto can set its own
standards," she said.
"That's their own business."
Board vice-chairman, Bert
Morin, argued that the
resolution by the East York
was not worthyof support.
"If we supported such a
resolution, universities
would soon be asking for
entrance examinations
again," he said.
