(Photo by Joanne Buchanan) /Inn sumers' Beat Arinoyed with metric BY LYNN TODGHAM The Metric Commission recently conducted a survey of consumers to determine attitudes to the progress of metric switchover. It was discovered that many consumers are annoyed with ..Brie slowness and confusion of conversion, especially the typical profile which is a middle-aged woman of low income and education, ac- cording to the Commission. Here are some problems -involving metric recipes that consumers may run across. Recipes in imperial measures are becoming difficult to shop for since so many grocery packages have been converted. • , Package • recipes, often printed in both metric and imperial, are sometimes intertwined and hard to follow. Some packages have switched to .metric - measured contents but continue to Carry imperial recipes. " • Phony metric cooking equipment coming from the U.S. and Far East now clutters housewares coun- ters. Utensils with both imperial and metric are confusing to cooks. However, using metric recipes and utensils will improve the results in cooking. The standardliquid metric measure of 250 millilitres, divides by, 25 into 10 measures, whereas the old imperial eight ounce cup divides into only six quan- tities (14i, 1/4, /, % and one cup). Therefore better recipes can be developed in Metric because they can he more accurate. Food Coupons In Quebec, a group called ACQ has conducted a study on consumer use of food coupons. They have con- cluded that only one coupon in 10 is ever redeemed by food shoppers, meaning that for every consumer taking advantage of the rebate offer, nine others are sub- sidizing the system. ° A 25 cents off coupon ac- tually costs manufacturers 59 cents in handling .and distribution charges for these nine coupons that are tossed out. Consumers will ultimately pay for "this situation. ACQ is encouraging Quebec consumers to boycott coupons. Here in Ontario, where there is no such movement, it would be wise for consumers to use their coupons. Food stores can help the shoppers by having a box available at the entrance of their stores for customers to' exchange coupons they do not need for ones of products they .use frequently. This way the shopper and store work for everyone's advantage. l KATHLEEN BRENNAN says WHY NOT SHAPE UP FOR SUMMER I DID I didn't look like this 45 pounds ago All of me last year YOUR CHANCE OF A LIFETIME PRE -SUMMER 1/2SPECIAL PRICE JOIN WEIGHT WATCHERS FOR $6.00 INSTEAD OF REGULAR $12.00 FIRST MEETING FEE May 10 to 230, 1981 (Senior Citizens and Students join for $3.00 during these two weeks) At the beach, on the tennis courts, at the cottage, the New Weight Watchers Food Plans can show you how to combine tasty summer fare with your summer plans and lose weight too. GODERJCHSIGNAkSTAR, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6,1981—PAOE 1,1* Knights raise money far dimity through raffle BY JOANNE BUCHANAN Harvey Lassaltne of Goderich has been pushing tickets for the Knights of Columbus annual charities raffle every week since Christmas 1980 and he doesn't plan to stop now. Harvey has two more weeks during which to sell the few hundred books of tickets the local Knights have left and he' is deter- mined to sell them all. He's had lots of ex- perience, having sold tickets for the Knights every year since 1974. Each ticket costs $1. and gives the purchaser a chance to win one of five new cars. The money raised on the province -wide raffle goes to various Knights of Columbus charities with the principal recipient being the Arthritis Society. While 50 per cent of the money is sent to the Ontario State Council of the Knights of Columbus for selected charities, the other 50 per cent stays in Goderich. Over the last eight years, the Knights have contributed more than $2 million to charities through their raffles. The Goderich Knights usually sell between400 and 500 books of tickets each year. Ticket sales went up In 1977 after Willard Legg of Goderich won a car in the 1976 raffle. This year the local Knights are trying to sell 700 books of tickets. Harvey and Grand Knight Gaeten Jacques are convinced it can be done. The draw for this year's. Need rink operator someone to operate the rink, but so far no one has ex- pressed an interest.
