Williams when he spoke to the Region Two hospital aux- iliary members at a con- ference in Exeter on Mon- day, April 22. The South Huron Hospital Auxiliary hosted the. con - 0 attend auxiliary conference ference, which included 22 hospitals in the Region Two district, an area extending from Tillsonburg to Wingham and Goderich. About 276 auxiliary members attended the con- ference, which was held at the South Huron Rec Centre. Father Williams of Strat- ford was the guest speaker and he stressed the impor- tance of having a sense of humor and being a volunteer. He said that volunteers need the ability to laugh and make other people happy. "How many people can relax with you, laugh because of you, not at you?" Father Williams asked. He quoted an old sal g,. "If your religion makes ou sad, it's bad," adding t the word "life" c ' id be substituted for " ligion". He explained that most peo- ple in a hospital are unhap- py, and that a hospital volunteer must strive to make them happy"We need to be open-minded, thank Two-year-old Dana Joy Lumby, daughter of Herb and Cathy Lumby of Goderich, had her hands full on Saturday as the Goderich Kinettes, dressed as clowns, banded out balloons in return for donations for cystic fibrosis research. Other head table guests in- cluded Robert Dinney of the South Huron Hospital board of directors, Leone Brock, president of the South Huron Hospital Auxiliary, South Huron Hospital (SHH) ad- ministrator Roger Sheeler, Ontario Hospital Auxiliaries Association (HAA) president Janet Becker of Grimsby, HAA first vice president Peggy Menzies of Clinton, Exeter Mayor Bruce Shaw, SHH head nurse Audrey Pooley, chairman of Region Two Cae Roberts of Strat- ford and her secretary Myr- tle Snedden. SHH administrator Roger Sheeler spoke and invited the ladies to tour the hospital. Mayor Bruce Shaw brought greetings from the town of Exeter. A delicious dinner was served catered by Jennie Rowe. The morning's program opened with the auxiliary prayer, and began with greetings from SHH Aux- iliary president Leone Brock. The minutes of the fall conference were read by Myrtle Snedden. Peggy Menzies of the Clin- ton Public Hospital Aux - and vice president of HAA of Ontario gave a talk on HAA merits and awards. Following that Mrs. Menzies led an exercise break, giving the ladies aaa;.opportu•_nity to stretch during the morning program. Jacqui Lewis and Eileen Seifred of St. Joseph Hospital in Guelph gave a lengthy report on their junior volunteer program. This program was formerly known as Candy Stripers. They reported that they had now extended the junior volunteer program into a summer program, as well as after-school. They said that last, sum- mer seven of their 40 junior volunteers were boys. The volunteers ranged in age from 13 to 16. They explained the nature of their orienta- tion day, and offered packets of information to other hospitals. Junior volunteers did such duties as feed patients, take wheelchair patients outside, work in the library, X-ray GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, .1 area and laboratory, and work folding towels. They stressed that job descriptions for volunteers must be flexible, and that the volunteer must be kept busy. "If .they don't feel they're working, they won't come back," Mrs. Lewis noted. The annual business meeting was held during the afternoon session of the con- ference. New officers for'the region were .installed: past chairman, Jacqui Lewis, Guelph; chairman, Cale Roberts, Stratford; first vice, Jean MacDougall, In- gersoll; second vice, Marion Finnie, St. Marys; and third vice, Marjorie Rimmer, Cambridge.
