Bridge club scores The Goderich Bridge. Club had eight tabes in play Tuesday nigh and the average score was 84. On the East West side, first place went to Auleen Curry and Jean Papernick who combined for a total of 119112 points. Jean Cook and Verna Worthy won second with 95 points. In third was Susan White and Bill Cochrane with 85 points. Mary Donnelly and Eleanor Erskine took top spot oil the North South side with 103112 points. Gord Rutledge and Rick Somers were next with 891/2 points, and Barb Howe and Marian Lane came in third with 86 points. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Viking teams split decisions BY TD . The GDCI soccer teams began Huron -Perth Con- ference play last Thursday in Exeter. The senior Vikings drop- ped a 3-1 decision to the Pan- thers, but the junior Vikings shutout Exeter 1-0 to record an opening day victory. The senior Vikings fell behind when Exeter scored on a bouncer that eluded goalkeeper John Sheardown. Goderich tied the score before the end of the first half when Mike Wedlock scored on a penalty shot, awarded for a "hands" in- fraction inside the penalty area. The Panthers , outhustled the Vikings in the second half, scoring twice on defen- sive lapses by the Goderich fullbacks. The junior Vikings made a first half goal by Greg Mar- shall stand up for their vic- tory. Marshall scored on a close -in shot after taking a pass from Mark Crawford. With the added advantage of the wind in the second half, - the Vikings kept the ball in the Exeter half of the field most of the time. The Viking forwards were able to put together an effec- tive passing attack 'which, combined with aggressive defensive play by the mid fielders and backs, allowed the Goderich team to hold on to the lead by controlling the ball. Fullbacks Chris Pitre, Andy Telford and Jeff Wood along with half -backs Paul McCartney, Jeff Feagan and Ed Craig had strong games for the Vikings. Goalie Greg Lapaine had the shutout for the Vikings. The Vikings played their home opener here Tuesday against the Wingham Mustangs. Thursday, they travel to Stratford to play the Northwestern Huskies: The senior Vikings are coached by Del Almeida. Dick Madge is the coach of the junior team.
