Love never gives up, faith and hope never fail
BY G. E. COWAN,
B.A., M.Ed.,
LAY MINISTER,
DUNGANNON-NILE
UNTTED CHURCH
As I write this, it is my
wedding anniversary. Doing
so in Dungannon is especial-
ly significant since it was
here that my young bride
and I began our life together
and now we are back after
such a long absence. It is a
day for remembering those
wonderful years since we
promised, before God, to
love and to be • faithful to
each other through sickness
and health, through good
times and bad, as long as we
both lived. And we have had
many good times and a few
bad times as all couples do.
But I have been blessed with
a most wonderful person to
be with. Love has always
been present. It is the kind of
love that Paul wrote about in
I Corinthians: 13.
"Love is patient and kind.
It is not jealous or conceited
or proud. Love is not ill-
mannered or selfish or ir-
ritable. Love does not keep a
record of wrongs. Love
never gives up."
Paul recognized that all
humans get out of sorts,
become angry or upset, and
are often just plain mean
with those around them. And
he was- saying that when one
of us is like that, the other

The Salvation Army from
Goderich entertained at
Huronview on Saturday
afternoon, April 18.
A duet by Elsie Henderson
and Margaret McQueen ac-
companied by Frank Bissett
at the organ was enjoyed by
the Sunday morning con-
gregation. The choir sang
the anthem Angels of
Easter.
Even though Monday was
a holiday, residents still en-
joyed Old Time music with
Molly Cox and Alberta
Driver providing the enter-
tainment. A sing -song was
included in the afternoon
program.
Mrs. Marjorie Bokee,-Jliai
Ruddock, and Mrs. Alma
Davis went to Goderich to
the Anglican Communion on
Tuesday afternoon.
Wednesday was declared
fish and chip day and the din-
ing room was rearranged for
the noon meal of deep fried
fish and chips. Following
lunch, various staff
members displayed their
musical talents for an hour
long afternoon program.
Bible Study was held in the
chapel on Thursday ' after-
noon and the same day the
annual spring conference of
the Ontario Association of
Homes for the Aged, Region
No. 3 was held in Guelph.
The guest speaker was Pro-
fessor Samuel Martin from
the University of Western
Ontario who spoke of The
Future Impact of the Elderly
on the. Economy. A filin sell-
ed "Health Care with a'Dif=
ference was also viewed.

must be patient and kind.
When one achieves
something special, the other
should not be jealous or the
achiever conceited or
boastful. After all, in a mar-
riage we are partners and
equally important, even if
one is the homemaker while
the other brings home the
pay cheque..
The influence of a' loving,.
understanding mother in the
home is one of the greatest
contributing factors in the
success of the husband. And
where both partners share in
home duties and in outside
work, even greater patience
and understanding is need-
ed. And that can come only
with true love.
A young man whose mar-
riage was breaking up, once
said to me, "I don't really
know what love is." And I ex-
plained to him that it was a
feeling of affection for
another person that couldn't
change no matter what the
other person did. Paul meant
that when he said that love
never gives up, its faith,
hope and patience never fail.
It's the same feeling that a
parent has for his or her
child, the same feeling that
God has for us.
If only married couples, in
the bad times, could
retnember this. Even sexual
infidelity could be forgiven
where there is faith. If only
young people who have left
home and done all manner of
things that they feel their

parents would "kill them
for" could realize that a
parent's love never dies and
parents are hoping
desperately for them to
come home to be forgiven.
But we realize that, in
some situations, love never
did exist between marriage
partners or between parent
and child. In such cases only
the miracle of spiritual
rebirth can bring about a
reconciliation. And rebirth
simply means letting God in-
to our lives.
We must offer ourselves to
God in prayer, asking that
He come into our hearts and,
when He does, love is within
us for the Bible clearly
states that God is love.
And if you feel so. guilty

done that you just can't face
your loved one, remember

Christ died on the cross for
people just like that, for all
of us, that our sins might be
forgiven even a thousand,
thousand times.
And so I urge all who read
this to try again Paul's
recipe for love. I know from
personal experience , that.
your lives will be richer and
you will have happier an-
niversaries with . each pass-
ing year.
UCW gather to, discuss
needs of handicapped
, Huron -Perth Presbyterial
held a special, event on 'Mon-
day, April 13 at the Central
United Church in Stratford.
Two hundred and fifty
United • Church Women
(UCW) from across Huron -
Perth gathered to focus their
concern on the needs of the
handicapped. It being
Easter time, each lady was
given a cross made from
real palm leaves.
The meeting opened with a
rousing sing -song conducted
by. Marj Gibsonof Central
United' in Straford. Anne
Walters, president of Huron-
Perth Presbyterial, welcom-
ed.everyone and Liami
Mikelson, president of Cen-
tral UCW, brought warm
greetings from her church to
all those present.
Grace Pym introduced the
first speaker, Myron Angus
of the Advisory Council for
the Physically Handicapped.
He has had no use of his
hands and feet since birth.
He spoke about mouth pain-
ting and later demonstrated
his work. Mr. Angus is .a
member of Rehandart,
whose " members' paintings
are reproduced on greeting
cards, calendars, etc. He
congratulated Stratford Cen-.
tial for its accessibility to
wheelchairs and stressed the
work that needs to be done to
make public buildings ac-
cessible to the handicapped.
These b;' dings include
library, , ' ping centre,
barber, ': ` , churches,
washrooms and motels. The
biggest problem is
transportation, he said. It
costs $40,000 to keep a disabl-
ed person in an institution
whereas if he could be at
home, it would only cost
$12,000, said Mr. Angus. He
is married with a family of
three.
There was an hour's break
in the meeting for reading.
There was a book display
where books could be pur-
chased from the Resource
Center from Mitchell.
Rhythmic exercises were led
by Muriel Coultes and the
ladies of Central UCW pro-
vided a lovely lunch.
Donna Tuffnail introduced
the second speaker of the
night, Larry Parker, who
was also born with no use of
his hands and feet. He is

Dimes. He noted that too
often the handicapped are
forgotten after „ childhood
and said the March of Dimes
is concerned with adults. He
would have preferred this
year to be called "The Inter-
national Year of Persons
with Disabilities" - with the
emphasis put on them as
persons first. He stressed
that people should be more
aware, of the abilities of the
disabled --instead of seeing
only their disabilities. He
said that, while physical bar-
riers were great, attitude
barriers were even bigger.
He showed a very infor-
mative film, "A Different
Approach" which is
available to the public. Mr.
Parker also does mouth

The courtesies were given
by Fran Ldtu,in.
- The closing "worship was'
taken by the ladies from St.
John's United Church in
Stratford. It was in the form
of a skit, on the Easter
theme, showing how dif-
ferent 'people viewed the
cross. In the end, it is seen
that the cross and all it
stands for, is most vital in
the lives of all people.

BEAUTIFUL THINGS
DO HAPPEN!
A very practical way -of teaching our
children to share. and much more is to care
for a needy child overseas,
Your children will learn exciting new things
about another country and a culture that's
altogether. different to their own.
They • will learn values and character
through this practical demonstration of.love.
But that's. just.the beginning. .. Caring.for
a child living inextreme poverty for less
than 70C a day. does far.more than simply
provide food, or an education. or medical
care. It means a future. a future he may
never have had unless someone helps 'him
today.
Beautiful things do happen when you
decide to care for one child for just $19
