Elston to be
ministry critic
MPP Murray Elston, the
newly elected Liberal
Member of the Provincial
Legislature fpr the Riding of
Huron -Bruce is to be the
party's critic of the Solicitor -
General's Ministry.
In making the announce-
ment, Liberal Leader Stuart
Smith expressed every con-
fidence in Elston's ability
"to undertake this very im-
portant area • of criticism.
We've been • concerned for
some time that the jobs of
Solicitor General and At-
torney .General are held by
the same person. I know
Murray will keep the
pressure on the Government
to change the situation".
Elston is a lawyer with the
firm of Crawford, Mill,
Davies and Elston, and has
served as solicitor .for the
Town of Wingham and the
Township of Turnberry.
He is anxious to par-
ticipate in the debates of the
Provincial Legislature, and
anticipates a very challeng-
ing time at Queen's Park
under a majority govern-
ment. "There is a great deal
of work to be done. It's the
Opposition's job to make
sure that the Government
doesn't just sit back now that
they have the power of ma-
jority.
"Personally, I'm delighted
to have responsibility for the
Solicitor -General's Ministry,
which will really give me
something to get my teeth in-
to. The Minister's perfor-
mance has left a` great deal
to be desired, and I think it is
utterly wrong for one person
to have the responsibility for
both the 'legal' Ministries,"
Mr. Elston said. • .
Elston's appointment
became effective on the first
day of the new Legislature,
and will continue until fur-
ther notice.

The Goderich Art Club met
recently at the home of
Annie and Kitchener Fin-
nigan for their last business
meeting of this season.
The secretary, Katinka
Dorrance, read a letter of
resignation from President
Lu Legg who has too many
other commitments to carry
on. The members greatly
regret Lu's resignation and
they have appreciated very
much the work she has done
and the advice that she so
willingly gave at all times.
However, the members
are pleased that she still
intends to come to the studio
and work with them
whenever it is possible.
Barbara McWhinnie
replaced the vice-president,
Gailya Maguire who is away
on holiday. Bambara opened
proceedings by reading an
interesting article entitled
"Art is Life." This was
followed by a printed letter
in a church magazine from
Mrs. Ian Hind, first
president of the Goderich Art
Club approximately 25 years
ago. Probably many people
will remember that the
Reverend Hind was, at that
tiine, minister of the First
Baptist Church in this town.
Mr. and Mrs. Hind are now
missionaries in Kenya,
Africa. Mrs. Hind, who has
one of her paintings hanging
in the Goderich court house,
is still working at her
favorite hobby and. trying to
teach students as well as
interpret African life
through art.
Plans were finalized for
the Art Club's spring
exhibition at the Goderich
library. The show will open
on Thursday, May 14 from 7-
8 p.m. Free coffee and
