Garnes planned
for handicapped
On Friday, May 22, the
Regional Games for the
Physically Handicapped will
be heldinLotdan.
Lasting over the weekend
of May 22, with ac-
commodation at the Ramada
Inn, men and women bet-
ween
etween 12 and 50, from all over
our .region, will compete in
an astonishing variety of
events. Many of the events
have been scheduled in
Roberts School and 'Fan-
shawe College's athletic
facilities, and will attract
both Canadian and in-
ternational lass athletes.
Nearly all events also
attract complete novices
whose major interests are
recreational. Organizers
make special efforts,
however, to ensure that
partic ipants compete only
against those with similar
handicaps.,
The sense of achievement
that results from athletic
competition is hard to
match. From childhood,
most of us have participated
in sports activities. First in
street hockey, baseball and
football and then through
school in more organized
programs including in-
dividual as well as team
efforts. For many, sports
activities continue right
through adulthood. Behind
all that activity, the spirit of
fair competition and the
personal sense of
achievement are important
pleasures we enjoy. "
What many people often
fail to realize, ishow for-
tunate we are in being able to
take so much of that sporting
activity for granted. Only
recently . havewe begun to
realize - that for the
physically disabled people,
the opportunities for spor-
ting competitionhave been
traditionally more iii noted.
Times are at last changing
and now sporting com-
petition 'is Seen as an im-.
portant part of a normal life -
tivhatever the "handicap.
`Tht organizational
problems associated with
accommodating several
hundred athletes are
enormous. Harold Staples,
the Chairman of the
Organizing'. Committee,
doesn't see himself as a
superman. though. fn his own
words, "We've got a great
team together here and
we've got tremendous
support throughout the
community from in-
dividuals, all kinds of clubs,
societies, ' private groups
and business, 'as Well as
.strong support from the
London PUC and the
Ministry.: of 'Culture • and
.Recreation. The sheer.
numbers of people who have
put their weight behind these
Games is amazing. Although
I p can't give public
recognition to all_ those that
have helped, I will be
thanking all of them for-
mally after the Games. Its a'
real co mmunity effort.",
What kind of people
participate in these Regional
Games?
"Basically two kinds",
says Keith Cartwright,
himself a wheelchair athlete
involved in the Ontario
Wheelchair Sports
Association and member of
the Organizing Committee.
"First, there's the
recreational athlete. In fact
that's how many of our finest
athletes started in com-
petition, just being in-
terested in doing Some kind
of sport for fun. The Games
offer a lot for that kind of
person. The popularity of the
social events, the barbecue,
the Saturday Night Banquet,
and that kind of thing, shows
how important the
recreational and social
aspects of the Games are.
Apart from just sheer
interest though, there' s`also
a group of fine athletes,
many of them Canadian and
international class. Many
people just don't realize
what level if ac-
complishment we do have in
Ontario from disabled
athletes. .
Before all the hoopla of the
Games themselves, there is
a need for a solid planning
effort well in advance of the
big weekend. John Walsh, *
Lecturer in Business*
Administration at the
University of Western
Ontario, is working with the
Organizing Committee to
promote the Games
throughout the Southwest
and Central West Region,
"It'.s a' tremendous
challenge", says John, "and,
in this, the Year of the •
Disabled, I think everyone
should make a special effort
to support the Games. We
have one major objective
to get more new participant'
.than ever before. Ideally, we
would like every community
throughout the region to be
represented by an athlete at
the Games. Registration is
j already under way and with
the help of Bell Telephone,
.we have been able to set up a
WATS line' so that any
disabled person, whether
they are members of sports
associations or not, can call
toll free and find out about.
accommodation and par-
ticipation
articipation in the Games (that
number is 1-800-265-5947). We ,
also hope that regular
competitors will encourage
others — a kind of bring a
friend approach"
. For those who are id
familiar with Gems for the
Physically Handicapped, its.
the range of events that is
likely . to be the biggest
surprise: swimming,
wrestling, rifle and pistol
shooting, archery,
weightlifting, club. throw,
discus, shot, javelin, all
kinds of distance racing and
team games — the list goes
on.
"One thing. you've .got to
realize", says Don Kenny, a
teadher ' at 'Saundess
Secondary School is London,
who is...helping with the
Sports Technical sub-
conlimittee. for the Games,
"is - that a handicapped
person can compete in son*
sports with absolutely no.
difficulty and in many others
with only minor
modifications to the usual
sporting rules. In fact we
•take great care in the
Regional Games to treat
people as athletes first and
as handicapped . people
• second. There's an absolute
minimum ofrule
modific$ition and, of course,
we have to conform rigidly
.with international and
Canadian • •national
regulations so that records
set at the Regional Games
can stand."
A last word from, two
people right on the front
lines, Doug Spero' and Bob
Graham of the London PUC
office, who are coordinating
the registration pros , now
under way, and • the ac-
commodation
arrangements.
"This year"they say,
"the Gaines will be better
than ever. Every" thing's
going for us. The city, in fact
the whole community, . is
solidly behind . the se Games.
We hope that we can attract
new athletes from all age
ranges and we are set up
here to make registration as
easy as possible and the
weekend a real success."

gets bike
BLUEVALE - Twelve -year-
old Sandra Thompson of
Bluevale, in a wheelchair
since she was four, got an
early birthday present from
her parents last week.
The gift is a Sloat bike
which can be operated using
the hands on the same
principle that a regular bike
uses the feet. The three -
wheeled bike is made so that
Sandra can sit comfortably,
stretch out her legs and
easily maneuver the vehicle.
The bike was custom built
for Sandra at Sloat's Custom
Welding and Fabricating in
Woodham.
