BARZ, BEREA-BY-THE-WATER LUTHERAN CHURCH Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope has stir- red the concern and caught the interest of millions of Canadians, and rightly so. This courageous runner has given new hope and deter- mination to those who fervently wish to see the fulfillment of the slogan "Cancer can be beaten". Minister's stu We all hope that science will soon find a cure for the most feared disease in Canada today. The nation was saddened when Terry Fox again developed cancer, but we all cohtinue to. hdpe for a miracle. In our cores,---. .unity too, many have prayed that Terry's life might'' -be spared - both because he is widely loved and respected, and because it would be a symbolic defeat for cancer. Yet the defeat of cancer would not mean the defeat of death. Those who do not die of cancer will die of something else. Human medicine may delay death, but it cannot defeat death. But the Bible says that death can be beaten — in' fact, death has already been' beaten by one Man. Jesus Christ, who is true God and Huronview news ,true Man, died on the cross bearing the guilt of the sins of the world. But He did not stay dead. He rose again from the 'dead. He came back to life in His body and will never die again. - Jesus said about His life: "No, one takes it from Me, buti lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again." (John 10:18) If anyone else would say that, it would be a silly boast. Jesus said He was going to do it — then He did it! The fact that Jesus rose is declared throughout the New Testament. One of the main duties of the apostles was to testify to Jesus' Resurrec- tion (Acts 1:22). One of them, Thomas, is called the doubter, but Jesus showed Himself to him, and Thomas Residents make. rabbits Rev. There were_ quite a few orders for Easter rabbits and the ceramic class were working on these on Tuesday afternoon, while at the same time, Rev. Broadfoot con- ducted a communion service for the Anglican residents. The Londesboro W.I. helped all residents with birthdays in the month of April celebrate. There was an excellent programme with Mrs. Alice Buchanan who is president of the WI acting as M.C. Mrs. Radford accompanied Jim McCall, while he played several selections on the violin. A familiar face to the residents was Rev. Bob Scott, who sang You Light Up My Life, followed by songs ap- propriate for the Easter season such as Rise Again, Jesus, He Is The Son Of God. Claire Vincent recited Cremation of Sam McGee, and all enjoyed Easter Song, Say I Do, I'm Healed, sung by Rev. Scott. With Hattie Wood at the piano, the residents enjoyed a hymn sing of favourite old hymns. Happy Birthday was sung to the residents celebrating their birthdays after receiving their cards. A cup of tea and a cupcake con- cluded the much enjoyed afternoon. (John 20:28) The disciples knew that Jesus was alive again in His flesh - and -blood body. (Luke 24:39) What does Jesus' resurrec- tion mean to •us? It means that Jesus is Who He claim- ed to be, true God, come in the flesh. -It - means that Jesus taught the truth - and that He can deliver on His promises. It means that God the Father has accepted Jesus' sacrifice as a perfect and complete payment for the sins of the whole world, yours and mine-. included. And when sin is Raid for, then death is defeated. (I Corinthians 15:56-57) When death is defeated, no other enemy can really harm us. Jesus declared that the day is coming when all the people who have ever lived will be raised from the dead. (John 5:28-29) Those who have not trusted in Christ will be raised, -but-will still be condemned, separated from God forever. Those whose trust is in Christ alone will be raised with a glorified body to be- in glory with Christ forever. Death can be beaten, because death hap been beaten - by Jesus Christ! U.C.V. hears history The April rneeting of Donnybrook U.C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. John Hildebrand with a small attendance. Mrs. Hildebrand opened the meeting with a reading, followed by singing the hymn, "0 for a Thousand Tongues". She then read "My Candle" while she lit a couple of candles. The responsive reading was taken from Matthew with Mrs. R. Harinaas leader. Mrs. Hildebrand gave a reading, "Gospel Address is to all People." A hymn was then read in unison. Mrs. R. Hanna gave a history of the Donnybrook U.C.W. starting in 1922 and 23. Back then there was an attendance of 25. In 1930 the average attendance was 13. Quilt batts cost 30 cents and two quilts for the bales were valued at$6. She gave the history up to the present time. She- also read some verses on how the women made their money for mission work; some of the methods were quite comical. Mrs. Hildebrand read about the disabled and Philippino homes and also about the group's foster child's home and school life. She said that by having and giving to a foster child, it also' helped in the com- munity in which the foster child lived. This report was followed by prayer. The hymn, "From Greenland's Icy Mountains", was sung followed by prayer. Mrs. R. Jefferson took over for the business. A number of invitations to Thankoffering meetings were read. Mrs. H. Jefferson and Mrs. S. Chamney assisted the hostess then and a social time was enjoyed. W.J. Denomme FLOWER :Hep Phone 524-8132 DAY OR NIGHT Agent for 24 hr.
