New member initiated
into Legion Auxiliary,
BY
CAROLYN HOLBURN
Fifty-one .members :.were
present at the April 14
general meeting of . the
Legion Ladies' Auxiliary
with one new member, Mrs.
Wanda Frydrych, ,being in-
itiated. •
Tag Day plans for June 12
and -13 were finalized with
Comrade Marion Hayes con-
vening the event this year.
Congratulations and
thanks were extended to the
Coloar Party which
represented the Legion so
adeptly in Bay City last mon-
th. Thanks were also given to
the many ladies who helped
at the recent Vimy banquet
held on April 11.
The Goderich Branch was
visited by a bus load of com-
rades from Lambeth Branch
501 on April 11 and were
welcomed by many of the
local Branch and- Auxiliary
members, including Eleanor
Worsell (Branch Sports Of-
ficer) and Peg Wood (Aux-
iliary Sports Officer) who
were rejects from the Easter
Parade the previous even-
ing. All kidding aside, these
ladies were terrific.
Plans are well underway
for the installation of new of-
ficers and the dance to follow
on May 23. All members are
urged to attend.
During the course of the
meeting, $10 was donated to
the Canadian Red Crass; $25
to the Goderich and District
Association for the Mentally
Retarded and $5 was pledged
to each Auxiliary member
who rides in the upcoming
bike-a-thon.
The various Committee
Reports we$e given with
Comrade Faye Sheardown
indicating_ that. she , had
remembered 13 Branch
members, one Auxiliary
member and one child of an
Auxiliary member with
flowers and cards as well as
with visits during their re-
cent illnesses.
•
Sports Officer Peg Wood
gave a detailed report of the
successful invitational bowl-
ing tournament held on
March 28. Comrade .Doe
• Queen, who now lives in
Richmond Hill, but was in-
strumental in getting this
tournament underway
originally, threw the first
ball of the tournament (and
got a strike). Comrade Doe
was the guest of Faye Shear -
down for a few days and
returned to Goderich for the
purpose of attending the
tournament.
The team of Jean Elliott,
Sharon Scruton, Karen
Draper and Bunny LeBlanc
will represent the Auxiliary
at the regional cribbage
tournament to be held in
Stratford on April 25.
Three teams competed in
the regional euchre tourna-
ment in St. Marys on April 4;
however, only the team of
Myrtle Good, Rose Hill, Vera
Chambers and Lu Watson
fared well.
Fifteen members are
celebrating birthdays this
month, including Comrade
Ruth Taman who will be 80
years young and Comrade
Mabel Cummings who will
be 71. Eight members will be
celebrating anniversaries,
five of which are over 35
years.
The mystery prize was
won by Esther Blackwell
and the attendance draw by
Heidi Beadle. .... .
Zone C-1 Commander
Mona Davis was introduced.
to the meeting by President
Sharon Seddon. ton. Comrade
Mona pointed out that the
Goderich Auxiliary has the
largest .number of members
in the Zone with 197 and as
such, a great deal of.
business had to he dealt with
at each executive general
meeting. She stressed the
importance of each member
supporting.her local and pro-
vincial executives since they
put a great deal of time and
thought into every decision
that is finally passed on to
the membership.
Auxiliary members were
reminded' that veterans are
a special breed of men and
that . in the haste to` grow,
they should not forget why
they • are members or what
price many of them had to
pay to be members of this
great organization. Comrade
Mona pointed out "that the
Legion is not a social club
and all members are here to
serve our'veterarIS and the
dependents of those who
served so well for us." Her
closing remark "that friend-
ship is akin to loving your
neighbour" should give
many something to think
about.
At the conclusion of her
speech, President Scruton
presented Comrade Mona
with a small gift of apprecia-
tion and a beautiful luncheon
prepared by Comrade
Laurie Glazier and her
helpers was served.
