UCW unit holds successful: white elephant auction
The Irish Unit of the UCW
of Benmiller United Church
held a very successftil white
elephant auction and bake
sale with tea served at the
Beruniller United Church on
Wednesday, April 8. There
was a splendid crowd with
people from Victoria United
Church in Goderich and
Holmesville United Church
and other friends attending.
The -_ auction started _.
around 1 pan. and during the
auction, lunch was served.
Several members of the
Irish Unit took their turn at
auctioneering while others
helped in different ways -
such as serving tea, atten-
4ding to the bake sale and
working with the auction.
The afternoon receipts
were encouraging and will
help considerably withthe
group's projects.
The Irish Unit also had a
boothat the auction sale for
the estate of Ken Morris on
Saturday.

Recreation Committee met
in Colborne Township Hall
Wednesday, April 15 at 8
p.m. President . Leonard
Fisher opened the meeting
-and secretary, Mrs. Helen
Riehl read the minutes of
last meeting.
The first item of business
involved the plans for soft-
ball- this season. It was
decided to have registration
for softball and T -ball for
boys and girls of all ages on
Saturday, May 9 in Colborne
Township Hall from 10 a.m.

to noon. Those in charge
mentioned the fact that it is
very important for children
to register on May 9 so teams
can be arranged and
children who are interested
in playing these games will
be sure to be included in the
teams when they are drawn
up. It also giVes the coaches
a chance to get in touch with
their teams well in advance
to .when they start playing.
It is hoped that soccer will
be played again this year.
• Euchre card parties have
proved satisfadtory and
have been enjoyed by all who
have participated.
Swimming plans and class
arrangements will be an-
nounced later.
The Recreation Commit-
tee will hold its next meeting
on Wednesday,.June2.

I am compiling a family
history of my relatives who
settled in your town. I would
like to contact descendants,

about my great-grandfather
and his family:
He was . Daniel Wilson.
Born in Scotland about 1821.
Married Mary Totichburn or
Marion Tichborn. They
farmed in Goderich
Township. Their children

William Taman returned
home to convalesce after be-
ing a patient in Alexandra
Marine and Genral Hospital,
Goderich for several weeks.
His many friends wish him a
speedy recovery.
Arthur Clark of Meneset
has returned home after be-
ing in the Goderich Hospital
for several days. His many
friends wish him a speedy
recovery.
Mrs. Beatrice Geiger of
Zurich visited with Mr. and
Mrs. Gordon Kaitting this
week.

been very well attended dur-
ing the winter months and

As spring is fast ap-
proaching, it brings with it
the extra work for people -on
the Iand and it may soon be
necessary to cancel the card
parties until late fall, so plan
to attend while they.last.

Tiger Dunlop Women's In-
stitute annual meeting will
be this Thursday, April 23,
commencing with a pot luck
luncheon at 1 p.m. Reports of
secretaries will be given and
officers for , the 1981-82
season will be installed. A
special invitation is extend-
ed- to those attending the
crewel embroidery course.

Plan contest
"What my library means
to me" is the theme of the
Huron County Public
Library drawing contest
sponsored at the Goderich
Branch Library.
The contest is open to
children aged 6 to 12. There
are two age groups, 6 to 9
and 10 to 12. Prizes will be
awarded in both age groups.
The contest is now in full
swing and all entries must be
at the Goderich Branch
Library by closing time
Saturday, May 9. The draw-
ing must appear on an 81/2
inch by 11 inch piece of paper
available at the local
library.
The winning drawings will
be displayed at the Suncoast
Mall during National Book
Festival, May 11 to 17. Good
luck to all participants!

Steve Millian of Colborne
Central has excelled in the
public speaking contest. On
April 6 he won at Harriston
and on April 25 he will be
competing in the provincial
semi-finals in Preston.
