Farmers _forced
to find other work
"Economic pressures on
Ontario farmers are forcing
many of them to find a dif-
ferent way to earn a living",
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture President Ralph
Barrie said, "and not just a
handful of people are af-
fected''.
This was evident April 1,
-I when over 500 concerned
farmers crowded into the
C1lesley Community Centre
to meet with OFA executive
members. They went to
discuss possible solutions to
the pressures that are for-
cing many of thea, aut of
business.
The OFA executive
presented the farmers with
several possible courses of
action the 25,000 member
lobby group could take. After
voicing their opinions and
concerns, the farmers gave
almost unanimous support to
a six point program.
Top priority was given to
some form of low cost, long-
term financing, as well as a
replacement for last year's
provincial interest rate
subsidy program. The
farmers want the provincial
plan to cover loans from both
banks and farm suppliers up
to a maximum of $150,000.
The new provincial
program would be based on a
graduated scale. Farmers
who owned less than half of
their farm would receive 100
percent of everything the
banks charged over 12
percent. Farmers with 90 to .
100 percent equity would' be
subsidized at the rate of 20
percent on everything
charged over 12 percent.
Payments would be made
quarterly.
The farmers also called for
an independent review
agency to look at each case
before banks could
foreclose. In addition, they
want an improved federal
stabilization program, an
emergency rescue program
for young farmers and a
reduction in farm interest
rates by providing tax
benefits to farm lenders.
There was unanimous
agreement that there should
be a long range financing
program' put in place as well.
This will require more funds
for Farm Credit Corporation
(FCC), and .a review of the
FCC lending criteria
Barrie said the new
programs would save many
hard-pressed farmers,_....._ -_--
These proposals will be
presented to the OFA Board
of Directors' meeting on
April 22 for ratification, he
said.
"Then the hard part begins
— we'11 begin to work far
government action."
Methane research
project sponsored
The Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food and
the Ministry of Energy are
jointly sponsoring a $188,000
project to build ' .a new
methane gas research facili-
ty at the Arkell Swine
Research Station near
Guelph.,
The facility, which in-
cludes tWo experimental,
digesters, is being built by
Roy Brandon Ltd., a . Kit-
chener
itchener contracting firifrand
should be in operation by this
summer. After it is com-
pleted; Professor Jack Pos
of the University of Guelph
will begin a five-year
research - study to develop
improved methods of pro-
ducing methane from
manure by anaerobic diges-
tion and using the energy
product most efficiently on a
livestock farm.
"An efficient methane
digester can help farmers in
several ways," ` said
Agriculture and Food
Minister .Lorne Henderson.
"It tackles waite manage-
ment problems, provides an
alternative to expensive con-
ventional fuels and produces
a useful fertilizer supple-
ment.
While there are farm -scale
methane digesters in opera-
tion in the United States,
cheaper natural gas prices
in Canada mean that Isuch
systems here must be more
economical.
"This project is part of the
continuing co-operation
between • the Ministry. of
Agriculture and Food and •
the Ministry of Energy to ad-
dress the problems and op-
portunities associated with
energy in agriculture," On-
tario Energy Minister
Robert Welch said.
The ministries have
already constructed a state-
of-the-art farm -scale
demonstration digester to
handle manure from swine
research buildings.
A digester uses bacteria to
break down organic waste to
produce. methane in' an air-
tight tank. Raw swine
manure produces a gas con-
taining about 50 -to 60 percent
methane, 30 to 40 - percent
carbon dioxide and 5 percent
other gases. This gas has a
heating- value of 500 to 600
British Thermal Units •
(BTUs) per cubic foot which
is about half that of natural
gas.
The Ministry of Energy
will finance the capital cost
of the new facility. The
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food will manage the pro-
ject in co-operation with the
University -of Guelph and the
Ontario Pork Producers
Marketing Board.
The demonstration
digester will use promising
state-of-the-art technology to
show livestock farmers the
benefits of using manure to
produce methane. The new
research facility will
develop improved ways to
produce and use methane.
Keep ponds clean
BY SAM BRADSHAW,
ENGINEERING ASSIST
Keeping ponds free of
weeds and algae depends
mainly in keeping plant
nutrients out of the pond. At
the Lethbridge Research
Station, it has been
demonstrated that rooted
aquatic plants can derive at
least 70 percent of their
phosphorous requirements
from the sediment. Surface
run-off from springs and
pond bank erosion during
spring and summer
represent major sources of
phosphorous and nitrogen
contamination in ponds,
therefore, sediment entering
the pond during spring thaw
contributes heavily to
nutrient levels in the pond.
Certain management
practices can reduce the
nutrient loading period.
Gullies that serve as water
courses for spring run-off
should be grassed and where
possible, rocks should be
used to slow up the waterto
prevent, soil from being
carried a long.
Top soil removed Oaring
construction of new ponds
should be deposited far
enough away so that it
cannot be washed back into
the pond and; if feasible, the
dug -out should be excavated
down to the nutrient poor
clay. The 4bank and
surrounding areas should be
seeded to grass and fenced to
keep cattle off the area until
the grass is established. I ,
Some farmers now fence
their dug -out and pump
water from the pond to water
troughs, to keep cattle away -
from the pond entirely. This
practice has an added
benefit when herbicides are
used to destroy algae
growth. Keeping livestock
away also avoids nutrient
enrichment from manure.
Sediments at the bottom of
the saturated water then
mixes with the water column
and feeds algae that appears
as blooms in July and
August.
For further information on
the control of algae in ponds,

entitled "Chemical Guide to
Weed Control" or contact
