Miss Forrester will perform a program that ranges from Schubert, Brahms and Debussy to folk songs. This famous artist has been heard in opera and con- certs around the world. A native of Montreal, she has appeared... -.with.. the..- Berlin,. Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera Company in New York as well as with the Toronto Symphony and the National Arts Centre here in Canada. She has made numerous appearances on television and has made many recordings. In January 1978, she 'had the distinction of being the first major soloist to appear in the People's Republic of China while touring with the Toronto Symphony. John Fraser, reporting to the Globe and Mail said: "The audience was obviously delighted with both the vi- sion of the lady herself, and, in particular, her efforts in Chinese during a special en- core... thereby winning over 18,000 people aU at once. Miss Forrester sings in seven languages, including Russian. She says the most important single element in a song is the words. The composer, she says, starts with the words and builds the music to emphasize the words so the performer must go to the words first. The concert is part. of the winter music series at the Blyth Centre for the Arts and presents a unique opportuni- ty for regional music lovers to see one of the world's great performers in the in- timacy of Memorial Hall. In his opening remarks, Mr. VandenBerg stated that he could not refuse an invita- tion to speak to the Legion, for as a young lad living in southern Holland in the Spr- ing of 1945, he saw Cana- dians for the first time. They had come as part of the Allied Forces to liberate his homeland from five long harsh years of domination by a foreign power with a Nazi philosophy. To the Canadian ser- vicemen who were part of that liberating force, the liberation of Holland brings back many memories of lost comrades and the visible ,,and invisible scars of war he said. Taking as his theme, "They `Served Till Death, Why Not we?", the speaker stated that the world has seen many rapid changes since the end of World War II; particularly in the fields of transportation and com- munications. "Materially we have never had it so good" continued the speaker, "but the world is not without its problems." Quoting the words of General Omar Bradley, Mr. VandenBerg stated that "we know more about the mystery of the. atom than we know about the sermon on the mount. We know more about the art of war than the art of peace." We, as a peo- ple, often forget the need for service and sacrifice in a world still filled with pain and poverty, he said. In this, the "me too" generation, selfishness is at an all time high. We often forget the plight of the un- born, the handicapped and nquet the elderly. The speaker stated that he was pleased to see such organizations as the Legion showing a continuing interest in the disabled and the aged. • Thinking back to the philosophy of the Nazis who had no use for the handicap- ped or the elderly, we must be on our guard that it does not happen again, he con- tinued. Duling World War II, Canadians in the spirit of service " and sacrifice went overseas and today the 'Netherlands is a free nation. Only through the spirit of Christianity, which is one of service and sacrifice, can we bring about a better world free of many of today's pro- blems, the speaker conclud- ed.
